PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Felipe Pontes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Boxer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Pontes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mike Boxer!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Felipe Paraventi and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boxer misses with a few strikes there.

Pontes drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Pontes is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Pontes stands and steps away. Boxer gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Pontes fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Boxer, pushing him back against the cage.
Pontes tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Boxer is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Pontes has hold of one of Boxer's legs. Boxer is fighting the takedown attempt but Pontes gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Pontes content to stall in guard here.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Pontes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pontes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Pontes is pushing down on Boxer's leg trying to pass to half guard. Boxer is fighting to maintain full guard but Pontes has managed to sneak the leg through.
Boxer won't allow Pontes to pass to mount.

Pontes escapes and gets back to his feet.
Boxer misses with the combination.

Pontes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Boxer's half guard.

Pontes tries to pass the half guard into mount. Boxer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Pontes frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Pontes stands up from mount. Strange move.
Boxer swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Pontes closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pontes goes for a takedown attempt but Boxer pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Felipe Pontes. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Pontes is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Boxer is just riding it out for now. Pontes eventually gives up the hold.

Pontes keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pontes frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Pontes is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Boxer has managed to escape the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Felipe Pontes dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Boxer misses with a double jab.

Pontes clinches up with Boxer and pushes him back against the cage.

Pontes pulls guard effortlessly.
Boxer preventing the sweep.

Boxer got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pontes has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Boxer has managed to get both his arms back between Pontes's legs - danger averted.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Pontes holds on and takes a little breather.

Pontes uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Boxer swats away the attempt to clinch by Pontes.
Boxer jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Mike Boxer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Pontes shoots in and gets a takedown into Boxer's guard.
Boxer wants to stand up but Pontes is controlling him.
Pontes trying to control the position from guard on top but Boxer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pontes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Boxer is keeping the position for now.
Boxer really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pontes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Pontes stands up and waves to Boxer to follow him.

Pontes closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Pontes lands in his opponent's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pontes gets to his feet. Boxer looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Pontes gets a takedown into half guard.

Pontes is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Boxer defends it well.

Pontes is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Pontes is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Felipe Pontes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pontes looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Pontes tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Boxer just stands there and leans against the cage.
Boxer is trying to break free.
Pontes jumps guard but Boxer stands there with Pontes around his waist. Pontes gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Pontes is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Boxer doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pontes.

Still in half guard, Pontes seems content to control.
Pontes tries to pass the half guard into mount. Boxer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pontes is looking for a kimura but Boxer is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Pontes to get the leverage.

Pontes is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Pontes escapes and gets back to his feet.
Mike Boxer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Pontes moves in looking to clinch but Boxer pushes him off.
Sloppy strikes from Boxer. Those never looked like landing.
Mike Boxer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Pontes darts in and clinches Boxer up against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well Pontes has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
