PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Calvin McCork (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phal Um (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McCork comes to the cage accompanied by Great Balls Of Fire By The Killer Himself. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 10 - 1, fighting out of New York, Calvin McCork!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 31 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Phal Um!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Jorge Garcia and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Um pushes McCork up against the cage in a clinch.
Um can't find room to land a body shot as McCork controls the action.
A frustrated look appears on Um's face as he tries to break the clinch.
A body shot lands from Um.
McCork drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Um gets the underhooks and prevents it.
A short right from Um.
McCork wants to take the fight to the mat but Um manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Um will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning McCork up against the cage.
Um tries a body shot but McCork blocks it.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Um lands a body shot.

Um breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
McCork swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

McCork manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Um on his heels. He'll look to pass Um's guard now, I'm sure.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
McCork pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Um is keeping the position for now.

McCork drops back, looking for a kneebar! Um looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Um looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Um!
McCork tries to improve position but can't.
McCork is working hard here to advance position.
Um trying to control the position but McCork is working away.
McCork might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Um landing a few strikes.
Um looks up at the clock and then as McCork takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Um smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Um cracks McCork with a big right hand but McCork just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
McCork manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

McCork actively working from the bottom here.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Um prevents McCork from improving his position.
Um thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McCork moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

McCork had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Um defends it easily.
Um scoring with punches to the head and body.
Um lands a couple of elbows.

McCork is looking for a triangle but Um pushes his legs off easily.

Um landing some decent shots from guard.
Um trying to control the position from guard on top but McCork is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Um makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
McCork looking to hit a scissor sweep but Um is one step ahead there.
McCork is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Um trying to control the position from guard on top but McCork is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Um engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Um is in close to McCork's body, working some short punches and elbows.

McCork is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Um defends well.
Um throwing strikes but missing.

McCork throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Um must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Um scoring with some ground and pound.
Um stays in close to McCork's body and controls the position.

McCork is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Um distracts McCork with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phal Um dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Um closes the distance and clinches up with McCork, looking for a takedown. Um pushes McCork against the cage but McCork circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
McCork fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Um is out of range.
McCork works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Um scores with a hook.
Um bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Um connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Um fails in his attempt to clinch.
Um shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McCork as he jumps to the side.
Um gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and McCork counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Calvin McCork has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phal Um.
Um shoots and misses
and McCork counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Um moves out of range of the strikes.
The fight stays on the outside here - Um looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McCork bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Um's head backwards.
McCork lands a right hook to the body.
McCork lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Um circles away quickly and effectively.
Um ducks under a wild hook from McCork.
Um thows a body shot but no joy.
Um misses with an uppercut.
Um checks a low kick from McCork.
McCork misses with a hook. Um ducked under it nicely.
A punch combination from Um misses.

Um moves into range and clinches up with McCork.
McCork misses with a punch on the inside.
McCork wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McCork gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Um.

Um breaks from the clinch.
McCork slips a jab and a cross from Um.
Um tries to clinch there but McCork circles away.

McCork decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Um wants to improve his position but McCork is controlling well.
McCork not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McCork is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Um is just riding it out for now. McCork eventually gives up the hold.

McCork is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

McCork is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Um still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Um has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
McCork tries to bench press Um off him but Um keeps the position.
McCork can't do much from the bottom here.
Um is working McCork over with some ground and pound from side control.
McCork is looking for a sweep.

McCork prevents Um from improving position.

Um wants to control but McCork is keeping him busy.
McCork tries to bench press Um off him but Um keeps the position.
McCork is trying to get back to his feet.
McCork is looking to reverse the position.
McCork manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Calvin McCork overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McCork is trying to get back to full guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
McCork is trying to control but can't.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

McCork is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Um pulls his head out easily.
Um lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Um working over McCork with some ground and pound. McCork looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Calvin McCork dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Um shoots in for a takedown but McCork shows good takedown defense.
Um fails to land with a series of punches.
McCork waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Um.
McCork misses the jab.
McCork throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Um.

Um drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Um wants to control from the top but McCork keeps moving.
McCork is trying to control the position from the bottom.
McCork wants to sweep but no luck.
Um trying to control but McCork is working from the bottom.
Um won't allow McCork to sweep him here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Phal Um wasn't active enough on the ground.
Um misses with a wild combination.
Um shoots in looking for a takedown. McCork tries to sprawl out of it but Um keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. McCork manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
McCork throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Um will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Calvin McCork has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phal Um.
Um uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by McCork.

Um decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
McCork works his way to full guard. Good work.

McCork escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Um gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Um preventing the sweep.

Um wants to control from the top but McCork keeps moving.
Um postures up and lands a big shot to McCork's brow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Um avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
McCork trying to control the position.
Um makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Um is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

McCork has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Um doesn't defend quickly enough and McCork has managed to lock this one up! Can Um escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to McCork on a fantastic submission victory.
