PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Josh Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank White (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Josh Owens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Frank White!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Owens thumps White with a low kick.

Owens gets tackled into the cage by White. White maintains the clinch.

Owens pulls guard effortlessly.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
White loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Owens uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Owens bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Owens trying to control the action but White is working from the bottom.
White is trying to improve his position.
White tries to escape but Owens is in control.
White tries to buck Owens off but Owens is having none of it.
Owens controls the position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
White is not content to let Owens control the position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
White struggling a bit here.
White is letting Owens control him for a moment.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

White moves into the clinch successfully.
Owens will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning White up against the cage.

Owens tries to land knees in the clinch but White avoids the damage to the body.
White is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Owens is keeping busy.
White tries to score a body lock takedown but Owens shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Owens escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Horrible takedown by White or perhaps it was just good defense by Owens which made him look bad.

Owens darts in and clinches White up against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Josh Owens seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

White decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

White shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
White wants to stand back up but Owens manages to pass into side control.

Owens has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Owens closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming White to the mat! White manages to get full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Owens has White up against the cage in a clinch.
White pushes Owens back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

White gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
White throws a big right hand that misses.
White wants to stand but Owens is controlling his posture from full guard.
Owens controls White momentarily but White frees himself.
White trying to control the position from guard on top but Owens is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Frank White wasn't active enough on the ground.
White shoots in and drives through. Owens sprawls well.
White walks into a left hand.

White is breathing heavily.

Owens closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. White did well to prevent Owens getting side control.
White gets back to full guard.
Owens tries to free his leg and advance position but White is retaining full guard.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

We're going to have a standup here because Josh Owens wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Owens lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Owens misses with a takedown

and White counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

White is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
White trying to control but Owens is working from the bottom.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
White looking to sit in guard and control but Owens gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Owens stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Owens shoots for a double leg takedown but White sprawls well. He's pushed Owens's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

White fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Owens, pushing him back against the cage.
White wants to break the clinch but can't.
Owens jumps guard but White stands there with Owens around his waist. Owens gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Josh Owens. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Owens breaks the clinch.

White has taken the fight to the clinch.
White drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Owens gets the underhooks and prevents it.
White has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Owens avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

A close second round but Frank White will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Owens shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as White sprawls well. White wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Owens gets slowly back to his feet.

White wants to take a breather but Owens is having none of it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

White is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Owens is just riding it out for now. White eventually gives up the hold.
Owens wants to improve his position but White is controlling well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

White is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Owens has managed to free his arm - good work.
White throwing shots but Owens is blocking nicely.
Owens has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. White is working away from the top position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

White seems to be looking for submissions.
Owens is doing well to control the position and prevent White from advancing to side control.
White trying to control from half guard but Owens is working away.
It looks like White is going to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Owens actively working from the bottom here.
White wants to lay and pray for a moment but Owens keeps working.
Owens flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Frank White has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Owens tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Owens fails with a takedown attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frank White comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think White has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
