Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Guy Downs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Loser. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Guy Downs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paul Penn!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Downs looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Penn is fending him off so far but Downs persists. Nope, Penn circles away and we're back to standing.

Penn takes the fight into the clinch.
Downs is trying to drag Penn to the mat but Penn just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Downs is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Penn pulls him back up using the underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Guy Downs. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn misses with a short punch on the inside.

Downs escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Penn looks to throw the jab but Downs is out of range.
Penn lands a head shot.

Penn clinches up against the cage.
Penn working some nice short punches in the clinch.
Penn pushes Downs back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Penn misses with a hook to the ribs.

Penn escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Penn swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Downs counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Downs wants to work for an arm triangle but Penn is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Penn makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Penn.
Penn tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Penn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Downs wants to pass the guard but Penn is keeping the position.
Downs advances position into side control!
Penn is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Downs off and has taken his back!

Penn looking for the RNC.
Downs trying to control but not successfully.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn punishes Downs with strikes from the back mount.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Downs is trying to break free.
Downs is working hard here to advance position.

Penn is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Downs is defending well though. Penn let's go of the attempt for now.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Downs can't escape the position.
Penn lands with a hammerfist to the side of Downs's head.
Downs breaks Penn's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Penn looking to control.
Downs passes into half guard.

Downs is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Downs is looking for a kimura but Penn is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Downs to get the leverage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Downs wants to take a breather but Penn is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Downs works his way into full mount!

Downs looking for a guillotine from mount but Penn is having none of it.
Penn is trying to escape the mount.
Downs trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Penn tries to reverse the position but Downs maintains control.

Downs is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Penn is surviving well by controlling Downs's body position as best he can.

Downs jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Penn is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Penn and Downs has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn is trying to work for a sweep but Downs has mounted him!
Penn can't escape the position.

Downs with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Penn tries to reverse the position but Downs maintains control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Penn sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Downs is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Penn is just riding it out for now. Downs eventually gives up the hold.
Downs wants to free his trapped foot but Penn is holding on for dear life with his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Paul Penn will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Penn throws a body punch but Downs moves out of range.
Penn misses the shot to the body.
Paul Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Downs misses with a body punch
and Downs takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Downs changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Penn tries to avoid it but Downs manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Penn to the ground. Penn escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Downs doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Penn counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Penn throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Penn keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Guy Downs. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Horrible takedown by Downs or perhaps it was just good defense by Penn which made him look bad.

Penn shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Downs keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.
Penn pushing down on Downs's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Penn scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Downs is looking to improve his position.

Penn lands with a punch from half guard.

Penn slips a nice elbow through Downs's hands, connecting with Downs's forehead.

Downs is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Penn is tapping! Great win for Downs!
