The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
sims looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gaea is fending him off so far but sims persists. Nope, Gaea circles away and we're back to standing.
maxwell sims seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Excellent takedown into side control there by sims.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gaea tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but sims wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Gaea is trying to control sims's posture but sims avoids it.
Gaea is looking to regain half guard here but sims keeps moving and retains side control.
sims connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Gaea some visible discomfort.

sims is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gaea is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Gaea struggling a bit here.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Gaea moves away from the strike by sims.

Gaea throws a head kick that misses.
sims shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than sims was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Gaea is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gaea tries to reverse the position but sims maintains control.
sims looking to control but Gaea is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Gaea should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
sims jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Gaea is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Gaea and sims has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
sims is breathing heavily.
Gaea sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gaea works his way to full guard. Good work.

Gaea had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. sims is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Gaea Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take sims's back instead.
sims is trying to break free.
sims wants to get back to his feet.
sims tries to escape the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gaea working for a choke but sims is defending well.
You can see the frustration on sims's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Gaea is working for a rear naked choke. sims is not defending it well and Gaea has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! sims refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of sims's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!
