PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Walters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rez Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez has chosen Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Rez Cortez has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Johnny Walters!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rez Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Walters tries to move into range but Cortez moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Cortez swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Walters holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Walters is looking for a takedown up against the ropes. Cortez gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Walters tries for a takedown. No joy.

Walters works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Walters is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Walters slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Walters in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Walters is looking to take a break and control but Cortez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cortez is trying to control Walters's posture but Walters avoids it.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Walters misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Walters trying to control the position but Cortez is working away.

Walters goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Cortez has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Walters but great work by Cortez.
Cortez sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Walters is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Walters sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Walters won't allow Cortez to pass to mount.
Cortez throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Walters trying to control but Cortez postures up.
Cortez throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cortez trying to mount his opponent but Walters defends it.
Cortez wants to stand but Walters has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Walters is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cortez pulls his head out easily.
Walters tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Walters has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Cortez seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Walters actively working from the bottom here.
Cortez with the ground and pound but Walters uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Cortez has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Walters is proving hard to escape from.
Cortez is looking to advance position but Walters has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Walters throws some wild stikes that Cortez manages to avoid easily.
Cortez holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Walters tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Cortez is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Walters unloads with some shots from mount but Cortez bucks and avoids them well.
Cortez has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Walters's lack of action.
Walters thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Cortez's head.
Cortez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Cortez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Walters. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Cortez tries to kick Walters off but Walters keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Walters stalling.

Walters looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Cortez is in trouble now - Walters has advanced to mount!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cortez has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Walters dominated that round.
That's time! Walters's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Walters shoots in and bounces Cortez off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.

Walters drops back looking for a leg! Cortez is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Cortez manages to kick Walters off! Walters jumps back into Cortez's guard.
Walters pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Cortez is keeping the position for now.
Walters chips away with some ground and pound.
Walters passes Cortez's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Walters not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cortez is trying to stand up here but Walters is controlling him well.

Walters is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Cortez still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Cortez has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Cortez tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Walters is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Cortez off and has taken his back!
Cortez is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Walters.

Walters patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

Cortez is trying to defend against the choke here but Walters has an arm under his chin. This one might not last much longer. Walters Tightens the hold and Cortez taps out furiously! Walters displays superior BJJ to win the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Johnny Walters!
