Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mick Gerrard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kota Punga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Punga has chosen who let the dogs out as his entrance music. Kota Punga is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mick Gerrard! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kota Punga! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Jeff Smith and Micheangelo Fripello.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Punga shoots in looking for a takedown. Gerrard tries to sprawl out of it but Punga keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Gerrard manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Gerrard misses with a straight left. Punga pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gerrard lands a jab. Punga shoots in for a takedown but Gerrard shows good takedown defense. Gerrard gets caught flat footed, as Punga shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Gerrard wants to stand and escape but Punga is having none of it. Punga wants to control from the top but Gerrard keeps moving. Gerrard seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Gerrard's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mick Gerrard. Punga moves out of range as Gerrard strikes. Punga doesn't succeed with the takedown and Gerrard counters with a lovely shot to the body. Mick Gerrard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kota Punga. Punga with a lazy takedown attempt letting Gerrard counter with a right hand. Punga gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily enabling Gerrard to counter with a crisp jab. Punga fails with the takedown. Gerrard with a nice cross. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Gerrard feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Pungas jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Mick Gerrard is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Gerrard misses with a looping right. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Punga. Gerrard will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gerrard sizes up Punga with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Gerrard fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Punga throws a right and a left that both miss. Punga takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Punga looks gassed! Gerrard thows a left - swing and a miss! Punga with a poor takedown and Gerrard cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Punga has his takedown stuffed and Gerrard counters with a nice right hand that sends Punga toppling to the canvas! Punga scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Gerrard finish him?!
Punga is rocked! Gerrard darts in and lands a big hook, right on the button! Punga's legs crumble underneath him as he falls to the canvas! The ref tackles Gerrard before he gets to land any more shots to his stricken foe.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Mick Gerrard! Mick Gerrard retains his lightweight title! Mick Gerrard tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
