PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Yamamoto Takiyama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wilson Maughan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wilson Maughan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Yamamoto Takiyama!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Wilson Maughan!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Donald Grub and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Takiyama tries to score a power double leg takedown but Maughan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Takiyama somewhat.
Takiyama walks into a straight right hand from Maughan.
Maughan lands with a nice combination. Takiyama backs away looking to recover.

Maughan moves into the clinch.
Maughan blocks the elbow strike.
Takiyama is trying to pull guard but Maughan turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Maughan.

Takiyama manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Takiyama throws his legs up looking for a submission but Maughan uses it to pass to side control.
Takiyama is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Takiyama looks to move to half guard but instead Maughan has passed into mount! Damn!

Takiyama tries to reverse the position but Maughan maintains control.

Maughan tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Maughan content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Takiyama tries to get to full guard but Maughan has control of the leg.

Maughan stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Wilson Maughan hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Takiyama takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Maughan's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Maughan duly obliges.
Maughan throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Takiyama.

Takiyama rushes Maughan and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
A short uppercut from Maughan.

Maughan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Maughan moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.


It looks like Yamamoto Takiyama has been cut.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Takiyama.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Yamamoto Takiyama. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Takiyama doesn't manage to clinch there - Maughan circles away.
Wilson Maughan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Takiyama slips a jab and a cross from Maughan.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Takiyama tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Maughan paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Maughan digs a good hook to Takiyama's body.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Maughan tries to bum rush Takiyama with a series of wild strikes but Takiyama uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Maughan cracks Takiyama with an open hand slap.
Maughan circles away from the clinch attempt
and Maughan counters with a series of strikes. Takiyama will be more careful next time no doubt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Maughan feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Takiyamas jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Maughan rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Takiyama moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Takiyama moves in looking to clinch but Maughan pushes him off.
Maughan pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Takiyama back to the cage. Maughan follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

A right hook to the body lands for Maughan.

Maughan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Maughan cracks Takiyama with a good jab.
Takiyama misses with a takedown attempt - Maughan sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Maughan throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Takiyama stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Takiyama shoots for a double leg takedown but Maughan sprawls well. He's pushed Takiyama's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Maughan keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
A jab lands there for Maughan.
Wilson Maughan is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Maughan lands a lovely overhand right.
Maughan lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.


Takiyama is rocked!
Maughan cracks a nice hook into Takiyama's ribs.

Maughan fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Takiyama on the side of the head.
Yamamoto Takiyama is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maughan throws a series of punches but Takiyama moves out of range.
Maughan looks to land a combination. Takiyama sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Oh Takiyama is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Takiyama tries to close the distance and clinch but Maughan swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Maughan connects with a crisp jab.
Takiyama looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
Takiyama takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Takiyama throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Maughan was covering up waiting for the punch and Takiyama finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Takiyama seems to have got his legs back now.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Takiyama throws a big right hand that misses.

Maughan working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Takiyama doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Takiyama manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Takiyama is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Maughan is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Maughan has escaped and now he's on top!

Maughan stands up from guard. Let's bang!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

and Maughan counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Maughan goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Takiyama dives in and scores a takedown into Maughan's guard.

Takiyama postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Maughan is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Takiyama, into his guard.

Wilson Maughan is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Maughan decides to return to a standing position.

Wilson Maughan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Maughan winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
