Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nate Guerrero! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joao Mendigo! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Guerrero shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Mendigo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Mendigo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Guerrero gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Guerrero tries to stand but Mendigo is controlling from the bottom. Guerrero will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Mendigo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mendigo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Guerrero doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Guerrero manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Guerrero throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mendigo works some decent striking defense from the bottom. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Guerrero accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Guerrero wants to stand but Mendigo is controlling his posture from full guard. Guerrero decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Nate Guerrero seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendigo with a poor takedown and Guerrero counters with a takedown into side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Guerrero tries to move into full mount but can't pass Mendigo's legs. Guerrero has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Mendigo sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Mendigo is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Guerrero pulls his head out easily. Mendigo looks gassed! Guerrero seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mendigo does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Guerrero is looking for a kimura here.
Guerrero throwing shots but Mendigo is blocking nicely. Guerrero is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Guerrero looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Mendigo tries to get to full guard but Guerrero has control of the leg.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Guerrero is working for a kimura but Mendigo is defending it quite comfortably.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Guerrero shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Mendigo's guard. Guerrero drops back looking for a leg! Mendigo is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mendigo manages to kick Guerrero off! Guerrero jumps back into Mendigo's guard. Guerrero trying to control the position from guard on top but Mendigo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendigo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Guerrero can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Guerrero avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Mendigo can't keep his opponent in guard - Guerrero advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Guerrero passes the guard and advances to mount! Guerrero fails to take his opponent's back.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Guerrero is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Mendigo has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Guerrero stands up from mount. Strange move. Guerrero is looking to clinch. Guerrero misses the shot to the body. Guerrero will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Guerrero misses with a double jab.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Nate Guerrero dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Mendigo feints and as Guerrero raises his hands in defense, Mendigo changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Guerrero looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Mendigo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Guerrero swivels though and keeps the full guard. Guerrero is looking for a triangle but Mendigo pushes his legs off easily.
Guerrero has his foot on Mendigo's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mendigo works his way back into a safe position though. Mendigo slips nicely into half guard. Mendigo is looking for a kimura but Guerrero is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mendigo to get the leverage. Guerrero wants to control but Mendigo is keeping busy and won't allow it. Mendigo seems to be looking for submissions.
Guerrero is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mendigo's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mendigo's back! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Guerrero looking for the choke from the back. Mendigo tries to escape but Guerrero has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendigo defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.
Mendigo is really stuck here.
Guerrero is trying to stick to Mendigo's back but Mendigo is turning into Guerrero. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Guerrero's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Mendigo. Mendigo drops back looking for a leg! Guerrero is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Guerrero manages to kick Mendigo off! Mendigo jumps back into Guerrero's guard. Guerrero wants to sweep here but Mendigo controlling him for the moment. Mendigo pushes down on Guerrero's leg and manages to get into half guard. Mendigo wants to work for an arm triangle but Guerrero is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Mendigo is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Mendigo is working for a guillotine from mount but Guerrero frees his head quite easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendigo is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Mendigo!
