PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jonathan Courchesne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ted Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jonathan Courchesne!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ted Smith!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Courchesne misses with a takedown attempt
and Smith counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Courchesne feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Smith wants to sweep here but Courchesne controlling him for the moment.
Courchesne postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Courchesne with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Courchesne stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Courchesne is fighting to break Smith's control of his arms but Smith is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Smith has momentary wrist control but Courchesne slips an elbow through the middle.

Smith is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Courchesne is controlling him.
Smith is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Smith is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Courchesne stands up over Smith, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Courchesne has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Courchesne wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.
Smith tries to buck Courchesne off but Courchesne is having none of it.
Courchesne takes a little break here. Smith wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Smith taking punishment in the form of punches.
Courchesne in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Smith wants to control but Courchesne postures up.

Still in half guard, Courchesne seems content to control.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Smith is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Courchesne is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Courchesne lands a nice shot to the head.
Courchesne is landing with some decent strikes but Smith is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Courchesne misses with a takedown attempt - Smith sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Courchesne closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Courchesne pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Courchesne fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jonathan Courchesne. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Smith enables Courchesne to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Smith manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Ted Smith wasn't active enough on the ground.
Courchesne shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smith as he jumps to the side.
Some bone on bone action there as Courchesne checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
A combination from Smith does no damage.

Courchesne shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Courchesne showed some decent athleticism there.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Courchesne content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Courchesne seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Smith for as long as he can get away with.
Smith wants to improve his position but Courchesne is controlling well.
Courchesne wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smith keeps working.
Courchesne thows a huge punch but Smith dodges it nicely.
Courchesne winds up and cracks Smith with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Smith keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Courchesne takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Courchesne lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Smith is looking to get to half guard.
Smith wants to control but Courchesne is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Courchesne shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Horrible takedown by Courchesne or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith which made him look bad.

and Smith counters with a one-two to the body.
Courchesne shoots for a takedown but Smith saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Smith connects with a solid leg kick.

Courchesne shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ted Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Courchesne knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground.
Smith sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Courchesne slips a nice elbow through Smith's hands, connecting with Smith's forehead.
Courchesne wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Courchesne wants to pass to mount but Smith is defending the position.
Courchesne not doing much here.
Courchesne landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Courchesne thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Smith's head.
Courchesne passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Smith!
Smith keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Smith takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Courchesne wants to control the pace but Smith is squirming around nicely.
Courchesne lands a heavy elbow.
Smith is still in real trouble! Can Courchesne finish him?

The referee warns Smith that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Courchesne drops a big elbow. That's hurt Smith! More shots from Courchesne and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
