PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cain Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alberto Del Rio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mir comes into the arena with Sub-Mission blaring out of the sound system. Alberto Del Rio has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Cain Mir's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 7 - 1, fighting out of London, Cain Mir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Alberto Del Rio!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Sam Margolis and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Del Rio with a lazy takedown attempt
and Mir counters with a body kick that stops Del Rio in his tracks momentarily.
Del Rio darts in trying to clinch
and Mir counters with a slapping leg kick.
Del Rio shoots in for a double leg but Mir sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Mir darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Mir is thwarting Del Rio's attempts to control the position.
Mir controlling the action here.
Mir looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Del Rio can do anything to dispel that myth.

Mir throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Del Rio tries to get to full guard but Mir has control of the leg.
Mir with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Del Rio is looking to improve his position.
Mir stalling.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Cain Mir just wasn't active enough.
Mir tries to score a power double leg takedown but Del Rio sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Mir somewhat.
Del Rio slaps away a takedown attempt from Mir, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Mir drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Mir connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Del Rio some visible discomfort.
Del Rio struggling a bit here.
Mir is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Del Rio is looking for a sweep.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Del Rio sneaks back into half guard.
Mir perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Mir prevents Del Rio from improving his position.

Mir controlling the action here.
Del Rio is trying to control but can't.
Mir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Del Rio keeps working.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Mir counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Del Rio's guard now.
Cain Mir has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alberto Del Rio.
Del Rio looks gassed!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mir accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mir slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Mir controls the position from side control.
Del Rio really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mir. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mir has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Mir is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Del Rio will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Del Rio is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Mir wants to control but Del Rio is keeping him busy.

Del Rio stops Mir from passing to mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mir looks up at the clock and then as Del Rio takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Mir smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Mir controls the position from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cain Mir dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Del Rio gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Mir counters with a stiff right hand.
Nice takedown defense from Mir. No joy for Del Rio on that attempt.
Mir changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Del Rio displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Mir.
Del Rio dives in and grabs Mir's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mir pushes down on Del Rio's head and hops out.
Cain Mir has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alberto Del Rio.
Del Rio shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mir as he avoids it easily.
Del Rio shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mir but Mir pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Mir drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Mir is looking to work some ground and pound but Del Rio has wrist control.
Del Rio is breathing heavily.
Mir seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Del Rio is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Mir looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Cain Mir overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Del Rio escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mir gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Mir postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Del Rio preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Del Rio is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Del Rio looking to control but Mir passes into half guard.
Mir content to control rather than advance.

Mir working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Mir has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mir is nestled in close to Del Rio, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Mir content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Mir's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Mir wants to finish this one by submission but Del Rio is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Mir.

Mir can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Del Rio is looking to escape.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Del Rio slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cain Mir dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Mir keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Mir shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Del Rio's guard.
Del Rio has Mir pulled in close to control his posture.
Mir is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Mir throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Del Rio works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Mir is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Del Rio can do to turn this around?

Mir got a little sloppy there for a moment and Del Rio has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mir has managed to get both his arms back between Del Rio's legs - danger averted.
Del Rio takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Mir passes Del Rio's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Mir is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Del Rio is surviving well by controlling Mir's body position as best he can.

Mir is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Del Rio has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Del Rio tries to hold on but Mir pushes him away.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mir avoids the attempt from Del Rio to control.

Mir unloads with some vicious shots from mount and Del Rio wants out - he looks towards the referee who steps in to save him! Mir celebrates on the cage and the crowd goes wild!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Cain Mir!
Cain Mir decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
