PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between No Name (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonny Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jonny Stevens will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 21 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, No Name!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jonny Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stevens tries for a takedown but Name sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Name throws a lazy body kick
and Stevens makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
No luck for Stevens with that takedown attempt.
Stevens changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Name tries to avoid it but Stevens manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Name to the ground. Name escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
No Name has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonny Stevens.
Stevens tries to grapple but his opponent circles
enabling Name to counter with a crisp jab.
Stevens moves in looking to clinch but Name pushes him off.
Name throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Stevens.

Stevens bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Stevens connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Name some visible discomfort.
Name is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Stevens asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Stevens slows the pace down.
Name pushes Stevens away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Stevens gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Name is pushing Stevens's head away, looking to escape. Stevens manages to hold on to the position though.
A lull in the action here.
Name wants to get back to his feet but Stevens drags him back down.

Stevens is staying tight to Name's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Name is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Stevens is controlling him well.
Name is not content to let Stevens control the position.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Name might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Name pushes Stevens away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Stevens gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Name trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Stevens is looking to take a break and control but Name is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Name sneaks out the side door and pushes Stevens away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Stevens shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Stevens takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Stevens gets caught flat footed, as Name shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Stevens is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A lull in the action here as Stevens stalls from top position.
Stevens wants to control but Name is keeping him busy.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Stevens remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Stevens works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Name tries to escape but Stevens is in control.
Check out the look on Stevens's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Stevens stands up.

Stevens throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Name was covering up waiting for the punch and Stevens finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Name is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Name stops a takedown attempt from Stevens.
Stevens blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Stevens looking for a takedown.
Stevens drops down looking for an ankle pick but Name pulls his leg out and moves away.
No Name has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonny Stevens.
Name leaves Stevens with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Name defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Stevens.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Stevens throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Name's waist but Name gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stevens off to one side.
Stevens will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Jonny Stevens showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Stevens gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Name counters with a two punch combo.
Name pivots, looking for a leg kick but Stevens is out of range and Name settles back down.
Stevens takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Stevens fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Stevens has his takedown stuffed
enabling Name to counter with a crisp jab.
No Name has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonny Stevens.

Name shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Stevens manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Stevens is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Name's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Name wants to control from the top but Stevens keeps moving.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Stevens trying to control the position from guard on top but Name is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Stevens is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jonny Stevens hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Stevens looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Stevens shoots in for a double leg but Name sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Stevens shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Name is trying to defend but Stevens finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
