Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, John Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Darren Bailey! The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Hirohito Nitta and Ren Mimura.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Smith closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Bailey to the mat! Bailey manages to get full guard. Smith seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Smith slips nicely into half guard. Bailey misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Bailey tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control. Bailey trying to hold on to Smith's head to control him but Smith postures up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bailey wants to get back to full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smith is figuring out what he wants to do next. Smith is looking for a kimura but Bailey is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smith to get the leverage. Smith seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Bailey looking for submissions off his back. Smith controlling the action here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith is pressing down on Bailey's thigh, looking to free his foot. Bailey is holding on for now. Smith content to control rather than advance.
We're going to have a standup here because John Smith wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. A head kick misses from Smith. Smith manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Bailey on his heels. He'll look to pass Bailey's guard now, I'm sure. Smith trying to control but Bailey is working from the bottom. Smith showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bailey working a defensive guard but Smith passes into half guard.
Smith could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Smith frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Smith controlling from the full mount. Smith is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Smith extends the arm and Bailey is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). John Smith! After the fight, John Smith was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
