Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mick Gerrard! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Douglas Dejesus! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A left lands for Gerrard. Gerrard fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Dejesus on the side of the head. Dejesus gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Dejesus shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gerrard sprawls well. Gerrard wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Dejesus gets slowly back to his feet. Gerrard misses with an uppercut. Dejesus saw that one coming. Dejesus shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Gerrard connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dejesus with a lazy takedown attempt enabling Gerrard to counter with a crisp jab. Mick Gerrard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Douglas Dejesus. Dejesus closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Gerrard throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Dejesus shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Gerrard counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. Gerrard keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Dejesus fails with the takedown and Gerrard counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Gerrard with a jab.
That's two minutes gone in the round. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Gerrard moves into range and connects with a jab. Dejesus tries for a takedown but Gerrard sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Gerrard swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Dejesus closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gerrard circles away. Gerrard lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Dejesus shoots in for a takedown but Gerrard shows good takedown defense. Dejesus shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Gerrard counters with a straight that turns Dejesus's legs to rubber! Gerrard pushes forward with more strikes and Dejesus goes down, battered and bloody! That's a wrap folks!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mick Gerrard! Mick Gerrard retains his lightweight title! A less than humble Mick Gerrard misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
