PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Hawke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kevin Hawke!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Chris Downing and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Maia throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Hawke tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Maia is in Hawke's guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Hawke wants to get back to his feet but Maia is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Maia pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hawke is keeping the position for now.

Maia loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Maia is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Hawke is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Hawke has escaped and now he's on top!

Maia bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hawke's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maia wants to pass the guard but Hawke is keeping the position.
Hawke is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Maia passes Hawke's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Maia working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Hawke is defending against the submission attempts here by Maia.

Maia is in close to Hawke's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Maia has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

You get the feeling that Hawke really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Maia lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Maia jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Hawke is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Hawke and Maia has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Maia throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Hawke works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hawke is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Maia with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Maia won't allow Hawke to get back to his feet.

Maia drops back, looking for a kneebar! Hawke looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Hawke looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Hawke!

Hawke stands up.
Hawke shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

and Maia counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maia has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Hawke is trying desperately to improve position.
Maia lands a heavy elbow.
Maia has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Hawke's face.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Maia cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Hawke wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

Maia moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Hawke has worked his arm free - good work by Hawke!

Maia goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Hawke is on top in guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Hawke has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Maia is proving hard to escape from.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hawke is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Maia asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Maia works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Maia, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
