The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn scores with a takedown into diaz's guard. Penn scores with a decent looking elbow strike. diaz wants to sweep but no luck. diaz controls Penn momentarily but Penn frees himself. diaz keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass. Penn missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. diaz working a defensive guard but Penn manages to pass into side control anyway.
Penn is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, diaz has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn works to advance to full mount. diaz defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Penn scores with a couple of good head shots there.
diaz sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Penn is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Penn fails to advance to diaz's back. Penn is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, diaz has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Penn looks gassed!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Penn is trying to take his opponent's back.
diaz is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Penn jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… diaz is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by diaz and Penn has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
diaz manages to get back to half guard. Penn stops diaz from getting back to his feet.
diaz gets full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn is looking to advance position but diaz has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Penn is trying to reverse the position but instead diaz has taken his back - oops! diaz doesn't have the hooks in and Penn manages to turn into his guard.
Penn wants to pass the guard but diaz is keeping the position. Penn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! diaz is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Penn, into his guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Penn looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
That's four minutes gone in the round. diaz has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Penn to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! diaz is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Penn pulls down on the head and he's put diaz to sleep! This one is all over!
