PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Genghis Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mariusz Groszek (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Khan's entrance music is Mongol. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Genghis Khan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mariusz Groszek!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yukihiro Shimada and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Groszek lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Groszek misses with a two punch combination.
Groszek throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Groszek circles away from the clinch attempt.
Groszek falls off balance throwing a combination

and Khan counters by moving into the clinch.
Khan lands with a short punch from the clinch.


It looks like Mariusz Groszek has been cut.

Khan pulls guard effortlessly.
Khan seems keen to control Groszek's posture.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Genghis Khan.
Khan tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Groszek counters with a series of strikes. Khan will be more careful next time no doubt.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Groszek misses with a double jab

and Khan moves into the clinch.
Groszek wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Khan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Khan tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Groszek paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Khan instigates a clinch.

Khan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Groszek swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Khan counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Khan moves away from the strike by Groszek.
No joy there for Groszek, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Groszek scores with a one two! Khan had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Khan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Groszek swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Khan tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Groszek misses with a wild combination.
Groszek misses with a double jab.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Groszek throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Groszek throws a left and a right that both miss
and Khan counters with a lovely shot to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Khan wants to clinch.
Groszek throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Khan counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Groszek swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Groszek throws a poor cross that misses
and Khan counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Groszek looks gassed!
Groszek will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Groszek takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Khan closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Khan ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Khan no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Groszek falls off balance throwing a combination

and Khan holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Khan fails to pull guard.

Khan jumps guard and drags Groszek to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Groszek is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Khan has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Groszek is looking to defend but Khan has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Groszek! Khan pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Groszek taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Genghis Khan!
After the fight, Genghis Khan was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
