The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendez works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
It looks like Dave Bautista has been cut. Bautista with a poor takedown letting Mendez counter with a right hand. Bautista really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Bautista fails with the takedown and Mendez counters with a slapping leg kick. Bautista tries to clinch and Mendez counters with a takedown into side control. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Bautista is working to avoid the ground and pound but Mendez connects with a decent elbow.
Dave Bautista's cut is getting worse. Bautista is trying to improve his position. Mendez has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Bautista is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Mendez yanks on the arm and Bautista is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Mendez.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Tony Mendez! Tony Mendez is the new heavyweight champion! After winning the bout, Tony Mendez thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
