Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kohei Shimabukuro! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, James Mendon! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendon digs a good hook to Shimabukuro's body.
Mendon moves into the clinch. Mendon misses with a hook to the ribs.
Mendon softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Mendon tries to throw a body punch but Shimabukuro avoids it by throwing Mendon back against the cage. Shimabukuro is trying to maintain a safe position but Mendon gets an underhook and turns Shimabukuro into the cage. Mendon tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Shimabukuro's elbow. With the fighters clinched against the cage, Mendon creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. A body shot lands from Mendon.
Shimabukuro changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Mendon fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Mendon lands a glancing blow to the side of Shimabukuro's head. Mendon is looking to slow Shimabukuro down with leg kicks. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mendon is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Mendon tries to clinch up. Kohei Shimabukuro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. The fight stays on the outside here - Mendon looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendon fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Shimabukuro has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Shimabukuro looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mendon is fending him off so far but Shimabukuro persists. Nope, Mendon circles away and we're back to standing. A solid body kick from Mendon. Shimabukuro is breathing heavily. Mendon scores with a spinning back kick! Shimabukuro walks forward, straight into a front kick from Mendon. Mendon fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Shimabukuro has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Mendon throws a leg kick which misses Shimabukuro's front leg but catches the back leg as Shimabukuro tries to avoid it. Shimabukuro sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. A solid leg kick lands there for Mendon.
Mendon has closed the distance and engaged Shimabukuro in a clinch.
Mendon lands a left hand that snaps the head of Shimabukuro backwards. A left hand lands to the body for Mendon.
Mendon throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Shimabukuros head. Mendon digs a right hand underneath Shimabukuro's ribcage. Shimabukuro let out a lung full of air as it connected. A nice left hand lands by Mendon.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Mendon.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendon lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Shimabukuro. Mendon makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Mendon working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Mendon lands a body shot. Mendon breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jab from Mendon. Mendon closes the distance and clinches. Mendon digs a right hand into Shimabukuro's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Shimabukuro's gas tank. Mendon digs a right hand underneath Shimabukuro's ribcage. Shimabukuro let out a lung full of air as it connected. Mendon lands with a right to the head. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Mendon digs a right hand into Shimabukuro's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Shimabukuro's gas tank. Still in the clinch, Mendon scores with a nice short uppercut. Mendon lands with a light punch inside. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
James Mendon dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!
A kick lands to the mid section there for Mendon. Mendon lands an overhand right. Mendon lands a big head kick that sends Shimabukuro tumbling to the mat! Mendon takes a step backwards and waves Shimabukuro back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Shimabukuro is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mendon drops a shoulder and throws a monster hook that connects perfectly to the side of Shimabukuro's head, knocking him out cold! Mendon is extatic as he celebrates with his cornermen.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:15 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). James Mendon! After winning the bout, James Mendon thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
