The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brown lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Brown. Brown misses with a jab, cross combination.
Brown lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Malat at a distance.
Malat slips a jab and a cross from Brown.
Brown tries to clinch up but Malat circles away and keeps his distance. Malat dodges the punch combination from Brown.
A combination from Brown does no damage. Brown fails to land with a series of punches.

Malat has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Brown is trying to keep an underhook but Malat manages to get the takedown into half guard. Brown really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Malat. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Brown is looking to improve his position.

That's one minute gone in the round. Malat looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Brown is staying active underneath Malat, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Brown taking some punishment here, with Malat in his half guard. Malat is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Brown is just riding it out for now. Malat eventually gives up the hold. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Brown on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Brown is looking for a sweep. Malat is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Brown is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Malat is nestled in close to Brown, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Brown moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Brown thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage. Malat wants to pass the guard but Brown is keeping the position. Brown throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Malat makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Malat works a leg free and moves into half guard. Brown is looking to improve his position.
Malat slips a nice elbow through Brown's hands, connecting with Brown's forehead. Malat works his foot free and advances to mount. Malat lands a big elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brown is wriggling around trying to escape.
Malat looking to control but Brown is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Brown is bucking up trying to escape but Malat cracks him with another couple of good strikes. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Brown can do anything to dispel that myth. Brown regains half guard. Brown flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Malat has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Malat scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Malat lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Malat prevents Brown from improving his position. Malat works his way into side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Brown is trying to improve his position. Malat is chipping away with strikes.
Brown throws up a few punches. Malat lands an elbow. Malat stands up and beckons Brown to his feet. Brown tries for a takedown but Malat sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Malat clinches up with Brown and pushes him back against the cage. Brown lands a body shot in the clinch.
Brown works on Malat's body with a couple of short punches. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Brown lands a body shot in the clinch.

Brown closes the distance and clinches. A short body shot lands from Brown as the two fighters clinch.
Brown is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Malat struggles to land a body shot inside as Brown controls his hands.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
John Malat dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Malat misses with a takedown attempt - Brown sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Brown instigates a clinch. A right hook to the body lands for Brown.
Brown breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Brown displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. Brown scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Brown lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Malat backs up against the cage.
Malat circles away from the clinch attempt and Malat counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Brown's guard now. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Brown wants to sweep here but Malat controlling him for the moment. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Brown should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Malat passes into half guard. Brown is trying to stand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brown is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Malat scores with a couple of nice shots. Brown is refusing to be controlled, as Malat sits in half guard. Brown wants to improve his position but Malat is controlling well.
Malat lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Brown moves into full guard.
Brown strikes from his own guard. Brown is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Malat looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Brown!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Brown tries to get back to half guard but can't. A nice elbow there by Malat. Malat looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Malat working for a submission but Brown is keeping him at bay. Brown blocking the ground and pound. Malat landing punches. Malat is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Brown can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Brown is trying desperately to improve position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Malat putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Brown is rocked! Malat loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Brown scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Malat land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Malat stands and salutes the crowd.
