PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between António Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Budiman Prang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maia comes to the cage accompanied by It's a kind of magic by Queen. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, António Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Budiman Prang!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Paul Gruel and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Prang bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Prang looks to throw the jab but Maia is out of range.
Budiman Prang seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maia's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Prang connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Maia scrambles back to his feet.
Maia fails with a takedown attempt.
A shot to the liver by Maia. Beautiful body shot.
Maia fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Prang manages to avoid it.
Prang pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Maia shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Prang napping and manages to drive through into side control!
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Maia tries for a kimura but Prang is defending well.
Maia tries to score with some ground and pound. Prang controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Maia trying to control the action but Prang is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Maia swings around for an armbar but Prang sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Maia's guard.

Maia throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Prang wanted to stand there but Maia had control of the position.
Prang wants to stand and escape but instead Maia has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maia wants to pass the guard but Prang is keeping the position.
Prang really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Maia. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Maia wants to control from the top but Prang keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maia engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Maia trying to control the position from guard on top but Prang is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia is really struggling to control Prang but he's trying to hold on to the position.

We're going to have a standup here because António Maia wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Maia takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Prang connects with a nice looking jab.
Prang looks for the body kick but Maia saw that one coming.
Maia throws out a loose jab but Prang uses good head movement to avoid it.
Prang swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Nice defenses there by Prang.
Prang moves forwards but Maia connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Prang pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Maia closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Prang to the mat! Prang manages to get full guard.
Maia throws an elbow that misses. Prang uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Maia's guard. Nice move by Prang!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maia is pulling down on Prang's head. It's preventing any offense from Prang, at least for the moment.
Maia bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Prang's guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Maia wants to pass the guard but Prang is keeping the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Prang is looking to stand up but Maia isn't so interested in that idea.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

António Maia dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


The fight stays on the outside here - Maia looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Maia dodges the punch combination from Prang.
Maia defending well as Prang loads up on a big left hand.
Maia shoots in for a takedown but Prang shows good takedown defense.
Maia slips a jab from Prang.
A telegraphed right hand from Prang misses the target.
Maia misses with a straight right.
Prang lands an overhand right.
Prang fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Maia manages to avoid it.
Prang takes a jab right on the kisser.
Maia fails with a takedown attempt.
Prang tries to bum rush Maia with a series of wild strikes but Maia uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Maia bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Prang throws a right hand that misses

and Maia counters with a single leg into guard. Prang didn't expect that.
Maia trying to control but Prang is working from the bottom.
Maia is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Maia stops Prang from standing up.
Maia will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Prang can't keep his opponent in guard - Maia advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Maia seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Prang is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). António Maia!
