Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Oddie Olias! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeff Smith! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Olias slips a jab and a cross from Smith.
Olias shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Smith is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Smith closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Olias to the mat! Olias manages to get full guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Olias not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Olias. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Olias wants to hit a switch here but Smith passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Olias there! Smith lands a big elbow. Olias is working to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smith breaks from Olias's wrist control and lands an elbow. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Olias wants to hold on but Smith pushes him away. Smith tries to control but Olias wriggling away. Smith is in the full mount, landing strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith can't control as he wanted to and Olias manages to get the fight back to his half guard. Olias is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Smith pulls his head out easily. Smith is looking to advance position but Olias won't allow it. Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Olias is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold. Smith not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Olias keeps working.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Olias gets full guard. Smith content to stall in guard here. Smith has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Olias to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Smith is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Olias pulls down on the head and he's put Smith to sleep! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:33 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Oddie Olias!
