PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Hawkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Humberto Montes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawkins comes to the cage accompanied by Stronger-Kanye West. Humberto Montes told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kevin Hawkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 1, fighting out of New York, Humberto Montes!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, John Roberts and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hawkins dodges the punch combination from Montes.
Montes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Hawkins really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Montes fails to land with a series of punches.
Montes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Montes throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Humberto Montes is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Hawkins misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
No joy there for Montes, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
No luck for Hawkins with that takedown attempt.
Montes looks to land a combination. Hawkins sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Hawkins closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Montes is trying to control but can't.
Montes manages to get to full guard.

Hawkins drops back, looking for a kneebar! Montes looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Montes looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Montes!
Hawkins is trying to get back to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Hawkins's face as Montes controls the position.
Hawkins tries to buck Montes off but Montes is having none of it.
Hawkins regains half guard.
Hawkins is pressing down on Montes's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Montes passes Hawkins's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Hawkins wants to improve his position but Montes is controlling well.
Hawkins is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Montes jumps into side control!
Hawkins is looking to reverse the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Montes tries to advance to mount but Hawkins denies him.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A lull in the action here as Montes stalls from top position.
Hawkins tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Montes wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kevin Hawkins will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Hawkins drops his hands momentarily and Montes takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Some wild striking there from Montes.
Montes throws a right and a left that Hawkins avoids nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Montes misses with a few strikes there.

Montes lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Hawkins circles away quickly and effectively.
Hawkins is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Montes.
Montes misses with a jab, cross combination.
Montes throws a leg kick but Hawkins moved away.
Hawkins on the wrong end of a nice jab.

Hawkins showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Montes.
Hawkins avoids the head kick by Montes.
A punch combination from Montes misses.
Montes tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Hawkins is able to avoid easily.

Montes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Hawkins ducks under a wild hook from Montes.
Hawkins misses with a takedown
and Montes counters with a body kick that stops Hawkins in his tracks momentarily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Montes fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Hawkins is out of range.
Hawkins shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Montes sprawls well. Montes wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hawkins gets slowly back to his feet.
Hawkins shoots and misses
and Montes counters with a low kick, right behind Hawkins 's knee.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kevin Hawkins. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Montes rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Hawkins moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Montes swinging wildly here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Humberto Montes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Montes pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Montes throws a right and a left that both miss.
Montes looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Hawkins shoots in for a takedown but Montes shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Montes throws a right hand that Hawkins ducks under and follows up with a left that Hawkins also avoids with ease.
Hawkins misses with a takedown attempt - Montes sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Sloppy strikes from Montes. Those never looked like landing.
Hawkins shoots in for a double leg but Montes sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kevin Hawkins. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Montes is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Montes misses with a double jab

and Hawkins decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Montes's guard.

Hawkins postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Montes is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hawkins, into his guard.
Montes content to stall in guard here.

Hawkins looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Hawkins is looking for a triangle but Montes pushes his legs off easily.

Hawkins has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Montes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Hawkins looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Montes passes into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well, if Montes is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Hawkins looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Hawkins is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Hawkins looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Hawkins wants to get back to full guard but Montes has passed into side control.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Kevin Hawkins.
I think Hawkins has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
