1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Thompson! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Daniel Franklin and Alan Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Malapitan drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Malapitan working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Malapitan wants to control from the top but Thompson keeps moving. Malapitan chips away with some ground and pound. Malapitan connects with a couple of short punches. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Malapitan postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Malapitan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Thompson can do anything to dispel that myth. Malapitan trying to control the position from guard on top but Thompson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Malapitan content to stall in guard here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Malapitan stops Thompson from standing up. Malapitan stands up over Thompson, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Malapitan is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Thompson can't keep his opponent in guard - Malapitan advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Malapitan lands a nice short elbow. Malapitan landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Malapitan seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Malapitan stalling. Thompson looks gassed! Malapitan seems to be looking for submissions.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Malapitan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Thompson sees it coming and defends easily. Malapitan is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
