Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diogo Pontes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
15 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ralph Diaz! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Seu Braga and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Diaz gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Diaz breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Diaz tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Diaz jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Diogo Pontes's cut is getting worse. Diaz waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Pontes. Pontes drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Pontes trying to control but Diaz is working from the bottom. Pontes is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Diaz is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Pontes drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Diaz dives on top into guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Diaz has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pontes is proving hard to escape from.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pontes isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Diaz stacks Pontes on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Diaz! Pontes tries to get back to half guard but can't. Pontes is working hard here to advance position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Diaz tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. A control attempt from Pontes but he's now mounted! Pontes working to try and regain half guard.
Diaz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pontes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Diaz wants to stand but Pontes is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.
Pontes tries to improve his position but instead Diaz has taken his back! Pontes rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pontes is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Diaz's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Diaz's back! A lull in the action here.
Diaz has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke. Pontes is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Diaz with him. Diaz is trying to defend but Pontes has an arm under the chin now! Diaz grimaces and is forced to tap out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Diogo Pontes! A relieved looking Diogo Pontes thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
