PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Walters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Barry Schmelly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Schmelly's choice of entrance music: Possibility. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Johnny Walters!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Barry Schmelly!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Walters circles away from the clinch attempt
and Walters counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Walters blocks a jab.
Walters shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Schmelly counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Schmelly misses with a hook

Schmelly throws a poor cross that misses
letting Walters counter with a right hand.
Schmelly misses with an uppercut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Schmelly jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Schmelly tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Walters manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Schmelly lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Walters circles away quickly and effectively.
Walters throws a chopping leg kick but Schmelly manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Good shot there by Schmelly.
Barry Schmelly is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Walters fails with the takedown
enabling Schmelly to counter with a crisp jab.
Schmelly throws a looping overhand right but Walters ducks down to avoid it.
Sloppy strikes from Schmelly. Those never looked like landing.
Walters shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Schmelly as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Walters. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Schmelly throws a hook but Walters blocks it.
A looping hook to the body misses from Walters. Schmelly does a little dance to reset his feet.
Nice sprawl there from Schmelly as Walters shoots in.
Schmelly throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Walters sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Schmelly stuns Walters with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Schmelly tries to clinch there but Walters circles away.
Schmelly keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Walters shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Schmelly pinned against the cage. Schmelly gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Schmelly tries to clinch up.

Walters shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Walters was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Schmelly is working to get back to half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Walters avoids the attempt from Schmelly to control.
Schmelly keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Walters lands a heavy elbow.
Walters raining down shots from the mount!
Schmelly tries to hold on but Walters postures up.

Walters sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Schmelly is looking to get to half guard.
Schmelly slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Schmelly looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Walters looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Schmelly wants to control but Walters is keeping busy.
Walters tries to pass to full mount but Schmelly defends it.

Schmelly slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Schmelly looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Walters tries to free his leg and advance position but Schmelly is retaining full guard.
Walters trying to control the position from guard on top but Schmelly is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Walters missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Walters got a little sloppy there for a moment and Schmelly has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Walters has managed to get both his arms back between Schmelly's legs - danger averted.

Schmelly is trying to control the position but Walters postures up.
Walters pushing down on Schmelly's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Walters trying to control the action but Schmelly is working from the bottom.
Schmelly moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Schmelly is trying to keep Walters in close.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Johnny Walters will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Schmelly takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Schmelly misses the jab.

Walters darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Walters is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Schmelly is just riding it out for now. Walters eventually gives up the hold.

Walters seems to be looking for submissions.

Walters is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Schmelly still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Schmelly has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Schmelly is looking to take a break and control but Walters is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Walters is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Schmelly tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Walters regains half guard.
Walters is looking to improve his position.

Walters is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Schmelly pulls his head out easily.
Schmelly wants to free his trapped foot but Walters is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Walters tries to get to full guard but Schmelly has control of the leg.

Schmelly in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Walters tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Schmelly!

Barry Schmelly seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
