Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paul Diaz! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lotlot Merchant! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Diaz lands a jab to the head.
Diaz shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Merchant as he jumps to the side. Diaz throws a head kick but Merchant moves out of range.
Merchant is looking to clinch. Diaz throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Merchant throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Diaz shoots in and drives through. Merchant sprawls well. Diaz takes a jab right on the kisser.
Merchant tries to clinch but Diaz is having none of it. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Diaz is defended easily by Merchant. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul Diaz. That's going to take a lot out of him. Diaz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Diaz wants it to stay on the feet. Lotlot Merchant seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A head kick misses from Diaz. Merchant lands with a good body shot. Diaz throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Merchant closes the distance and clinches up with Diaz, looking for a takedown. Merchant pushes Diaz against the cage but Diaz circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Diaz throws a sloppy head kick and Merchant moves out of range easily. Diaz looks for a takedown but Merchant sprawls well. Merchant misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Merchant shoots in looking for a takedown. Diaz tries to sprawl out of it but Merchant keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Diaz manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Diaz misses with a combination
and Merchant cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Diaz looks to land a body kick but Merchant moved away. No luck with that takedown attempt from Diaz. Diaz shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Merchant as he avoids it easily. Merchant fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Merchant stalks Diaz and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Diaz's face. Diaz staggers backwards, shaken. Merchant tries to clinch up. Merchant doesn't succeed with the takedown and Diaz counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Merchant's guard now.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Diaz in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Merchant wants to sweep here but Diaz controlling him for the moment. Diaz landing with the ground and pound. Diaz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Diaz lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Merchant escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Diaz gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Merchant has momentary wrist control but Diaz slips an elbow through the middle. Merchant had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Diaz defends it easily. Diaz won't allow Merchant to get back to his feet. Merchant looks gassed!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Diaz preventing the sweep. Diaz trying to control but Merchant is working from the bottom. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Merchant has his foot on Diaz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Diaz works his way back into a safe position though. Merchant has momentary wrist control but Diaz slips an elbow through the middle. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Diaz landing with the ground and pound. Diaz postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Merchant is rocked! Diaz scoring with some ground and pound. Merchant is still in real trouble! Can Diaz finish him? Diaz drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Diaz seems to have locked his on tight now - Merchant screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Diaz, as he picks up the win!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). Paul Diaz! Paul Diaz spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
