Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 1 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, George Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Saulo Henrique Assun! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Assun fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Gracie feints and as Assun raises his hands in defense, Gracie changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Gracie won't allow Assun to sweep him here. Assun preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Gracie postures up.
Assun really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Assun wants to sweep here but Gracie controlling him for the moment. Gracie controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Gracie preventing the sweep. Gracie is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
George Gracie has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Assun but Assun pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's one minute gone in the round. Assun cracks the inside of Gracie's front leg. Assun defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gracie. Assun connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Assun stuffs the takedown attempt from Gracie. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for George Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Assun shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Gracie looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Assun is trying to get back to full guard. Gracie is taking a breather. Assun says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Gracie takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Assun tries to roll over but Gracie keeps him under control. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Gracie moves nicely into side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Assun is looking to regain half guard here but Gracie keeps moving and retains side control. Gracie working away. Gracie working the ground and pound. Assun is being controlled here. Assun tries to get back to half guard but can't. Gracie grinds an elbow into Assun's temple. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gracie remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Gracie lands a decent elbow from side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie scoring with punches from side control. Gracie controlling the position from side mount. Gracie has hold of Assun's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Assun seems comfortable defending it but Gracie has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Assun is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Assun is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Gracie couldn't care less - he's delighted!
