Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Michael Messner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Drago Mcclain! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Colin Fray and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The fight stays on the outside here - Mcclain looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Mcclain is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Mcclain shoots in and drives through. Messner sprawls well. Mcclain fails in his attempt to clinch. Mcclain takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Michael Messner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Mcclain throws a hook but Messner blocks it. Messner moves out of range as Mcclain strikes. Messner ducks under a wild hook from Mcclain. Mcclain shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Mcclain showed some decent athleticism there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Messner wants to get back to full guard. Mcclain throwing shots but Messner is blocking nicely. Messner on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Messner tries to get out of the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mcclain throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Mcclain throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Mcclain missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Messner is positioning himself well to prevent Mcclain advancing to mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mcclain is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Messner sees it coming and defends easily. Mcclain sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Messner defending well though. Mcclain wants to work for an arm triangle but Messner is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Mcclain has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Messner is looking to control Mcclain's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Messner avoid being mounted? Mcclain seems to be working for a kimura but Messner defends the submission attempt. Mcclain wants to pass the guard but Messner is defending well. Mcclain thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Messner's head. Messner tries to roll over but Mcclain keeps him under control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Messner keeping control of the position. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Mcclain decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up. Messner lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Mcclain wants to clinch up but Messner keeps it at a distance. Messner scores with a hook. Messner cracks a nice hook into Mcclain's ribs. Messner lands the left hand. Mcclain pulls out of a head kick attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mcclain will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Mcclain slips under a jab from Messner. Mcclain looks for a takedown but Messner sprawls well. Michael Messner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Drago Mcclain. Mcclain uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Messner. Messner throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Mcclain stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Mcclain closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Messner did well to prevent Mcclain getting side control. Messner is looking for a sweep. Mcclain is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Mcclain slips a nice elbow through Messner's hands, connecting with Messner's forehead. Messner blocking the ground and pound attempt from Mcclain. Messner is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mcclain scores with a couple of nice shots.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mcclain trying to control the action but Messner is working from the bottom. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mcclain landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Mcclain tries to pass the half guard into mount. Messner knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Messner has hold of Mcclain's hands but Mcclain slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Messner keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Messner is trying to get back to full guard. Mcclain passes to full mount! Messner is in a horrible position here. Mcclain smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Mcclain trying to control but Messner is having none of it. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Messner is desperately trying to improve his position but Mcclain has a good base and remains in mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Drago Mcclain dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Mcclain closes the distance and clinches up with Messner, looking for a takedown. Mcclain pushes Messner against the cage but Messner circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Messner connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Mcclain tries to clinch but Messner is having none of it. Messner is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. Mcclain thows a left - swing and a miss! Mcclain fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Messner is out of range. Mcclain throws a one two combo.
Sloppy strikes from Mcclain. Those never looked like landing. Mcclain has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Messner finds it's way round the side to connect with Mcclain's head. Mcclain drops his hands momentarily and Messner takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Messner throws a poor cross that misses
and Mcclain counters with a single leg into guard. Messner didn't expect that.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mcclain stands up over Messner, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Mcclain is in close to Messner's body, working some short punches and elbows. Mcclain wants to stand but Messner is controlling his posture from full guard. Mcclain trying to control but Messner is working from the bottom. Messner seems keen to control Mcclain's posture. Mcclain looking to pass the guard. Mcclain landing with the ground and pound. Mcclain throws a big right hand that misses. Messner keeping moving, preventing Mcclain from controlling successfully. Mcclain postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mcclain keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Messner's head. Mcclain loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Mcclain wants to control from the top but Messner keeps moving. Mcclain lands a couple of elbows. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Messner wants to sweep here but Mcclain controlling him for the moment. Messner is working hard here to advance position. Mcclain trying to control but Messner is working from the bottom. Mcclain content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Drago Mcclain has got the better of the ground game so far. Mcclain drops back looking for a leg! Messner is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Messner manages to kick Mcclain off! Mcclain jumps back into Messner's guard. Mcclain trying to control but Messner is working from the bottom. Mcclain makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Mcclain lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Mcclain lands a couple of digs.
