PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Pain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Somera Vondu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Pain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Somera Vondu!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Summer Carpenter and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Vondu. No joy for Pain on that attempt.
Pain avoids a punch combination nicely.

Pain tries to keep at a distance but Vondu has taken the fight into the clinch.
A short uppercut from Vondu.
Vondu stops a takedown attempt from Pain.

Vondu ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Vondu no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Pain postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Pain trying to control the position from guard on top but Vondu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vondu tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Pain stands and steps away. Vondu gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Vondu's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Vondu duly obliges.
Pain misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Pain. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Pain tries to keep at a distance but Vondu has taken the fight into the clinch.
Pain has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Pain tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Vondu smiles and moves away.
Vondu throws a nice looking combination but Pain bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Pain closes this distance looking for a takedown but Vondu circles away.
Pain fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Vondu throws a series of punches but Pain moves out of range.

Vondu clinches up with Pain and pushes him back against the cage.
Vondu fails to pull guard.
Pain has Vondu pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Vondu manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Vondu successfully pulls guard.

Vondu working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pain doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pain manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Vondu looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Vondu lands a decent shot there.
Pain trying to control the position from guard on top but Vondu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Vondu looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Pain passes into half guard.
Pain takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Pain is working for a submission of some sort.

Pain throws a strike but Vondu avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Vondu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Pain trying to control the position from guard on top but Vondu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Vondu wants to sweep but no luck.
Pain working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Somera Vondu dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Vondu is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Pain's half guard.
Vondu misses with a head shot. Pain uses the momentum to regain guard.
Vondu is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Pain looking to control.
Vondu must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Pain working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Vondu.

Pain working for a triangle but Vondu defends it easily.
Pain is trying to control the position but Vondu postures up.

Vondu throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Pain works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Pain will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Pain preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Vondu wants to pass the guard but Pain is keeping the position.

Pain looking for a guillotine here but Vondu defends easily.
Vondu makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Vondu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pain. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Vondu postures up.

Vondu drops back, looking for a kneebar! Pain looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Pain looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Pain!

Vondu is trying to improve his position.
Pain wants to control but Vondu is keeping him busy.

Vondu takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Pain is looking to take a break and control but Vondu is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Vondu is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The strikes coming from Pain are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Vondu looking for a sweep but Pain has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Pain lands with some strikes.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Vondu working to try and regain half guard.
Vondu has given up his back here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Somera Vondu will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Pain seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Vondu does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The ref stands the fighters back up. John Pain wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Left hook, right uppercut from Vondu.

Pain closes the distance and clinches up with Vondu, looking for a takedown. Pain pushes Vondu against the cage but Vondu circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Pain tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Vondu connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Vondu fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pain, pushing him back against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Vondu pulls guard successfully.

Vondu working for submissions but it's allowed Pain to get to half guard.
Pain lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Vondu is trying to maintain the position but Pain is very close to passing his half guard.
Pain looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Pain performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Pain is keen to just control but Vondu is a slippery customer.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pain thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Vondu's head.
Vondu is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Pain wants to take a breather but Vondu is having none of it.
Vondu is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

We're going to have a standup here because John Pain wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Vondu dives in and scores a takedown into Pain's guard.
Pain looking to control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Vondu passes Pain's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Vondu seems to be working for a kimura but Pain defends the submission attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Somera Vondu.
I've got Vondu winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
