PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jackson Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derrick Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Derrick Johnson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jackson Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Derrick Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Stewart Dunkirk and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Davis checks it well.
Davis misses with a low kick as Johnson jumps back.
Davis fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Johnson throws a leg kick

and Davis counters with a single leg into guard. Johnson didn't expect that.

Davis stands up from Johnson's guard - Davis perhaps looking for a knockout.
Johnson thows a leg kick but Davis checks it
and Davis counters with a series of strikes. Johnson will be more careful next time no doubt.
Davis shoots in but Johnson avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Davis throws a head kick that Johnson semi-blocks.
Davis cracks Johnson with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Davis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jackson Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Davis tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Davis checks a leg kick nicely.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson is looking to clinch.

Davis fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Johnson, pushing him back against the cage.
Johnson connects with a knee to the head.
Davis is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Johnson tries to stall but Davis uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Davis misses with an elbow strike.

Davis breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Johnson gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Davis fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Davis wants a takedown.
Davis is breathing heavily.
A knee to the head by Johnson.
Johnson content to slow the pace in the clinch.
The crowd are getting on Johnson's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch.

Johnson stops a takedown attempt from Davis.
Johnson looking to stall.
Davis stalling in the clinch but Johnson improves position.
Johnson lands a knee to the head.
Davis tries to throw a body punch but Johnson avoids it by throwing Davis back against the cage.

Davis drags the fight down to the ground.
Davis is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Davis controls Johnson momentarily but Johnson frees himself.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johnson wants to stand but Davis is controlling his posture from full guard.

Davis has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Johnson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Johnson wants to stand and escape but instead Davis has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Davis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Davis controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jackson Davis dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Davis shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Johnson tries to clinch but Davis moves out of range.
Davis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
No luck for Davis with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jackson Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Johnson throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Davis tries to clinch up but Johnson circles away and keeps his distance.
A clash of legs there as Davis blocks the low kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Davis.
Johnson lands a slapping body shot.

Davis scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Johnson is trying to stand up here but Davis is controlling him well.
Davis takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Davis thows a huge punch but Johnson dodges it nicely.
Davis wants to advance to full mount but Johnson doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Davis wants to stand but Johnson has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Davis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Davis trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Davis misses with the combination.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Johnson, right into the meat.
Davis fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Davis will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Davis has a takedown stuffed.
Derrick Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Davis pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Johnson stuffs the takedown.
Davis walks into a left hand.
Johnson lands with a thumping leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derrick Johnson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Davis shoots in but Johnson avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Good leg kick by Johnson there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Johnson has managed to clinch.
Johnson keeps control of Davis as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Davis tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Johnson smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jackson Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Johnson throws a leg kick but Davis sees it coming and checks it nicely.

That's one minute gone in the round.
An inside leg kick lands from Johnson.
Davis misses with a takedown attempt - Johnson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Johnson misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Davis shoots for a takedown but Johnson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Johnson scoring well with a low kick there.
Davis shoots in and drives through. Johnson sprawls well.
Davis moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.
Danga de danga de dang - Davis scores with a four punch combination!
Davis is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Johnson takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Davis looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Davis fails with an attempt to clinch.

Davis drives through with a takedown into guard.
Johnson is looking to stand back up but Davis counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Johnson.
Davis controls the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Davis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.
Check out the look on Davis's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Johnson managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Davis.
Davis laying and praying for a moment but Johnson takes advantage and regains half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Davis is trying to control the action in half guard but Johnson is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Johnson looks like he's trying to stand up.
Davis with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jackson Davis.
I think Davis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
