Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brynjar Skjeggestad!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mason Thomas!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas throws a series of punches but Skjeggestad moves out of range.
Thomas fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Thomas throws a front kick aimed at Skjeggestad's knee but Skjeggestad avoids it well.
Thomas misses with a low kick.
Skjeggestad looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Thomas is fending him off so far but Skjeggestad persists. Nope, Thomas circles away and we're back to standing.
Thomas changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Skjeggestad tries to avoid it but Thomas manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Skjeggestad to the ground. Skjeggestad escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Skjeggestad wants to clinch up but Thomas keeps it at a distance.
Thomas throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Skjeggestad steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Thomas.
Skjeggestad shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Thomas as he jumps to the side.
Skjeggestad throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Thomas misses with a body kick.
Thomas throws a lazy body kick
and Skjeggestad counters with a lovely straight right hand!
That's one minute gone in the round.
Skjeggestad blocks a head kick by Thomas.
Thomas looks gassed!
Nice takedown defense from Skjeggestad. No joy for Thomas on that attempt.
Brynjar Skjeggestad has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mason Thomas.
A low kick from Thomas is predictable there
and Skjeggestad counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Skjeggestad.
Skjeggestad slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Skjeggestad has hold of Thomas's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Thomas tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Skjeggestad cranks the arm and Thomas screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Thomas, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Brynjar Skjeggestad!
