PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Floyd Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson comes to the cage accompanied by Bone Crusher- Never Scared. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Floyd Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jake Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Yves DeLean and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mendes bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Mendes working the ground and pound but Johnson is defending the strikes.

Mendes stands up.

Johnson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Mendes to the ground. Johnson is now in Mendes's guard.
Mendes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Johnson is one step ahead there.
Johnson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Mendes is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Johnson wants to control from the top but Mendes keeps moving.
Mendes wants to control but Johnson passes easily into half guard.
Johnson prevents Mendes from improving his position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mendes tries to kick Johnson off but Johnson keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Johnson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Johnson looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Floyd Johnson has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Mendes swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Johnson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mendes sprawls well initially but Johnson persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Mendes wants to get back to full guard.
Mendes trying to hold on to Johnson's head to control him but Johnson postures up.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Mendes is positioning himself well to prevent Johnson advancing to mount.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jake Mendes.
Mendes fails with the takedown.
Johnson moves into range and connects with a jab.


It looks like Jake Mendes has been cut.
Johnson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mendes pinned against the cage. Mendes gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Danga de danga de dang - Mendes scores with a four punch combination!
Mendes connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mendes tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Johnson swivels and escapes.

and Mendes counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jake Mendes will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Johnson throws a right and a left that both miss.
Mendes misses the shot to the body.
Johnson pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Mendes fails with the takedown.
Mendes lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Mendes.

Mendes shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Johnson manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Mendes missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Mendes controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson wants to stand up but Mendes is controlling him.

Mendes has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Johnson is proving hard to escape from.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Mendes sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Johnson's guard.
Johnson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Johnson tries to get out of the position.
Mendes content to control rather than advance.
Johnson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Johnson.
Mendes wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving.

Johnson wants to stand and escape but Mendes is having none of it.

Jake Mendes has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Johnson slaps away a takedown attempt from Mendes, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Mendes fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Floyd Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Mendes.
Johnson misses with a combination
and Mendes counters with a left to the body.

Johnson gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Mendes to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Mendes stands up from Johnson's guard - Mendes perhaps looking for a knockout.
Mendes shoots in for a double leg but Johnson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Johnson takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
The crowd cheers as Mendes lands an impressive looking overhand right. Johnson doesn't seem phased though.
Johnson looks to land a combination but Mendes avoids it well.
Mendes will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Johnson throws a right and a left that both miss.
Johnson swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Mendes decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Johnson's guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Mendes lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Mendes wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jake Mendes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Johnson shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Johnson showed some decent athleticism there.
Mendes is trying to control but can't.

Johnson tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johnson fails to land with a series of punches.

No luck for Mendes with that takedown attempt.
Johnson throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Floyd Johnson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Mendes slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Johnson had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mendes defends it easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Floyd Johnson.
Well Mendes has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
