Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Makunouchi Ippo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Diaz! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Leandro Rodrigues and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Diaz tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Diaz avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Ippo rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Diaz counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Diaz scoring with strikes to the body and head. Ippo kicks Diaz off and gets back to his feet. Diaz keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Ippo. Ippo misses with a hook. Diaz ducked under it nicely. Diaz slips under a jab. Ippo misses with a left hand and Diaz counters with a single leg into guard. Ippo didn't expect that. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Diaz thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Diaz with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Diaz won't allow Ippo to get back to his feet. It's a sloppy attempt though and Diaz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Diaz is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Diaz stopping the sweep attempt from Ippo.
That's one minute gone in the round. Diaz postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Ippo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Ippo lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Diaz! Diaz slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Ippo is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Diaz actively working from the bottom here. Diaz moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Ippo throwing strikes but missing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ippo wants to stand but Diaz is controlling his posture from full guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Diaz working for a triangle but Ippo defends it easily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Diaz keeping moving, preventing Ippo from controlling successfully. Ippo wanted to stand there but Diaz had control of the position. Diaz throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ippo wants to pass the guard but Diaz is keeping the position. Ippo is looking to stand up but Diaz won't let him. Diaz uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Ippo throws a lazy right hand but Diaz sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. A punch lands to the side of Diaz 's head but he takes it in his stride. Diaz looks for a takedown but Ippo sprawls well. Nice defenses there by Diaz. Ippo misses with a looping left. Horrible takedown by Diaz or perhaps it was just good defense by Ippo which made him look bad. Nice straight punches there by Ippo. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Ippo.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ippo throws the left hand but Diaz avoids the punch easily. Diaz takes one to the chin there. Ippo scores with a nice right hand.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Diaz feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Diaz is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Ippo is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Ippo has escaped and now he's on top! Diaz is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Diaz looks gassed! Ippo scoring with punches to the head and body. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Diaz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Ippo gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Carlos Diaz dominated that round. That's time! Ippo's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Ippo misses with a few strikes there.
Diaz is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ippo sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Ippo lands a body shot.
Good standup being displayed there by Ippo as he connects with a hook. Ippo throws a series of punches but Diaz avoids them all with ease. Ippo lands a head shot. Ippo is looking to clinch but Diaz is avoiding it.
Diaz takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. This has been an exciting period of action! Ippo connects with a single shot there.
Diaz is rocked! Ippo throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Diaz counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Diaz. Diaz is still in real trouble! Can Ippo finish him? Ippo pushes Diaz off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Diaz seems to have recovered his senses. Ippo lands a jab-cross combination. Diaz walks straight into a right hand from Ippo - that's dropped him! Ippo jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Diaz from any more punishment! Diaz complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Makunouchi Ippo! A relieved looking Makunouchi Ippo thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
