PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jorgen Submit (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chew Backer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chew Backer will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jorgen Submit!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Chew Backer!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Winston Howard and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Backer has Submit up against the cage in a clinch.

Backer jumps guard and drags Submit to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Submit stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Backer swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Submit trying to control the position from guard on top but Backer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Backer trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Backer looking for a sweep. Not yet Backer, not yet.

Submit is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Backer escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Submit gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Submit postures up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Submit fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Submit will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Backer tries to clinch but Submit is having none of it.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Submit.

Submit tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Submit has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Submit trying to control the action but Backer is working from the bottom.
Backer tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Submit presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Backer is in all sorts of trouble here.

Submit is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Backer has managed to escape the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Backer tries to lock up and control but Submit gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Submit controlling his opponent.
Backer is squirming around, avoiding Submit's attempts to control the action.
Backer sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Backer wants to control but Submit is keeping busy.
Submit is tying to control. Backer wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Backer makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Backer.
Submit pushes down on Backer's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Submit is trying to work for a kimura but Backer is defending well.
Submit is breathing heavily.
Backer is looking to improve his position.
Backer is trying to maintain the position but Submit is very close to passing his half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Backer has hold of Submit's hands but Submit slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Backer won't allow Submit to pass to mount.
Submit passes the guard and advances to mount!
Backer can't escape the position.
Submit throws a wild left hand from mount and Backer manages to wriggle his way back to half guard.

Submit is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Backer is looking for a sweep. Submit is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jorgen Submit dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Submit feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Submit stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Backer swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Submit wants to control from the top but Backer keeps moving.
Submit sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Backer's guard.
Submit prevents Backer from improving his position.
Backer is looking to get back to is feet but Submit passes into side control.
Submit lands a decent elbow from side control.
Backer is breathing heavily.
Backer tries to buck Submit off but Submit is having none of it.
Submit is looking to take a break and control but Backer is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Backer gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

That's one minute gone in the round.

Submit working for a guillotine from mount but Backer is in no mood to give up.
Backer regains half guard.

Submit looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Backer gets back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Backer is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Submit pushes down on Backer's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Backer slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Backer is trying to keep Submit in close.
Backer wants to sweep here but Submit controlling him for the moment.
Submit trying to control but Backer is working from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Backer looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Submit looking to pass the guard.
Backer wants to sweep but no luck.
Backer controls Submit momentarily but Submit frees himself.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Backer shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Backer showed some decent athleticism there.
Submit is trying to stand.
Backer is looking to advance position but Submit won't allow it.
Backer thows a huge punch but Submit dodges it nicely.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Backer is keen to just control but Submit is a slippery customer.
Jorgen Submit overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Submit is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Backer pulls his head out easily.
Submit is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Backer looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Backer trying to control but Submit is working from the bottom.
Backer is looking to work some ground and pound but Submit has wrist control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jorgen Submit will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Backer moves in looking to clinch but Submit pushes him off.
Backer tries for a takedown but Submit sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Submit changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Backer looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Backer is trying to work for a sweep but Submit has mounted him!

Submit working for a submission but Backer is keeping him at bay.
Submit trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Backer really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Submit takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.
You can see the frustration on Backer's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Submit doesn't have the hooks in and Backer manages to turn into his guard.
Backer slips nicely into half guard.
Backer trying to control from half guard but Submit is working away.
Backer slips a nice elbow through Submit's hands, connecting with Submit's forehead.
Backer throwing shots but Submit is blocking nicely.
Backer is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Backer wants to lay and pray for a moment but Submit keeps working.

Backer sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Submit defending well though.
Backer seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Submit does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Backer missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Submit wants to get back to full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Submit misses with a takedown

and Backer counters with a shoot takedown. Submit fights it but they end up in guard.
Backer trying to control but Submit is working from the bottom.

Submit is looking for a triangle but Backer pushes his legs off easily.
Submit is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Backer is controlling him.
Backer stopping the sweep attempt from Submit.

Submit looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Backer slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Backer trying to control the action but Submit is working from the bottom.
Chew Backer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Backer is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Submit has escaped the position, nice work there.
Submit struggling a bit here.

Backer cracks Submit with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Backer postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Backer grinds an elbow into Submit's temple.
Backer trying to control the position but Submit is working away.
Submit is trying to work for a sweep but Backer has mounted him!
Backer sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Backer landing strikes from the mount.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jorgen Submit.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Submit, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
