The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Messam throws a lazy right hand but Sawyer sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Sawyer misses with the combination.

Messam drops back looking for a leg! Sawyer is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sawyer manages to kick Messam off! Messam jumps back into Sawyer's guard.

Messam throws a hook but Sawyer avoids it easily.
Sawyer throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Messam's waist but Messam gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sawyer off to one side.

Messam is nestled in close to Sawyer, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Messam is looking for a kimura but Sawyer is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Messam to get the leverage.

Messam drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Sawyer manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Messam has Sawyer in his guard.
