PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Roman Burza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stanton Friedmon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Burza might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle. Friedmon has chosen Come Get on the Ho Train as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Roman Burza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Stanton Friedmon!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Friedmon connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Friedmon lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Burza has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Burza and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Friedmon doesn't manage to clinch there - Burza circles away.
Friedmon closes the distance and clinches up with Burza, looking for a takedown. Friedmon pushes Burza against the cage but Burza circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Stanton Friedmon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Friedmon darts in and clinches Burza up against the cage.
Burza is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Friedmon is defending well.

Burza pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A nice inside leg kick there by Burza. That's going to slow Friedmon down.
Friedmon tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Burza paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Friedmon misses with a body shot.
Friedmon looks to clinch

and Burza counters with a shoot takedown. Friedmon fights it but they end up in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Friedmon looking for a sweep. Not yet Friedmon, not yet.
Burza tries to free his leg and advance position but Friedmon is retaining full guard.

Burza wants to stand but Friedmon is controlling his posture from full guard.
Burza passes Friedmon's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Burza trying to control from Friedmon's half guard. Friedmon has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Burza wants to stand and escape but instead Friedmon has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Friedmon trying to control the position from guard on top but Burza is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Friedmon drops back looking for a leg! Burza is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Burza manages to kick Friedmon off! Friedmon jumps back into Burza's guard.

Burza looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Friedmon wants to control from the top but Burza keeps moving.

Friedmon drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Burza manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Friedmon has Burza in his guard.
Friedmon wants to sweep but no luck.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Burza wants to stand but Friedmon has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Friedmon trying to keep a closed guard but Burza is proving a slippery customer.

Burza got a little sloppy there for a moment and Friedmon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Burza has managed to get both his arms back between Friedmon's legs - danger averted.

Friedmon is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Burza pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Friedmon is keeping the position for now.

Burza preventing the sweep.
Burza is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Friedmon escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Burza gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Burza scoring with some ground and pound.
Burza trying to control the position from guard on top but Friedmon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Burza is pushing down on Friedmon's leg trying to pass to half guard. Friedmon is fighting to maintain full guard but Burza has managed to sneak the leg through.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Burza wants to take a breather but Friedmon is having none of it.

Burza decides to stand up.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Friedmon misses with a body kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Roman Burza will probably get the nod.
That's time! Burza's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Friedmon dives in and grabs Burza's left leg, looking for a takedown. Burza pushes down on Friedmon's head and hops out.
An inside leg kick from Friedmon misses.
Friedmon tries to clinch up.
Burza stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Burza wants it to stay on the feet.
Burza lands a nice hook to Friedmon's body. Friedmon takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

and Burza counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Friedmon misses with a double jab
and Burza counters with a body kick that stops Friedmon in his tracks momentarily.

Burza throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Friedmon was covering up waiting for the punch and Burza finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Friedmon is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Burza tries to free his leg and advance position but Friedmon is retaining full guard.

Friedmon keeping moving, preventing Burza from controlling successfully.

Burza avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Burza trying to control but Friedmon is working from the bottom.
Burzais looking to pass into half guard but Friedmon pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Friedmon is in guard.
Burza utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Burza seems keen to control Friedmon's posture.
Friedmon throws a big elbow that misses.
Burza keeping moving, preventing Friedmon from controlling successfully.

Friedmon drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Burza dives on top into guard.

Burza is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Burza throws a strike but Friedmon rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Burza is trying to control the position but Friedmon postures up.
Friedmon working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Roman Burza overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Friedmon has gone for a leg lock! Burza slips out almost immediately though and dives into Friedmon's guard.
Friedmon looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Burza puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Burza wants to take a breather but Friedmon is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Burza thows a huge punch but Friedmon dodges it nicely.
Friedmon is looking for a sweep. Burza is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Burza is trying to control. Friedmon wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Friedmon won't allow Burza to pass to mount.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Roman Burza just wasn't active enough.
Friedmon misses with an uppercut. Burza saw that one coming.
Burza jabs at Friedmon's body.
Burza moves out of range of the strikes.
A slow jab from Friedmon misses its intended target.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Roman Burza has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Stanton Friedmon.

Burza closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Friedmon to the mat! Friedmon manages to get full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Friedmon closes the distance and clinches.
Friedmon throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Friedmon swings wildly with an uppercut but Burza uses good head movement to avoid it.
Burza can't break the clinch.
Burza is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Friedmon is defending well.
Burza managing to block the knees to the body from Friedmon.
Friedmon drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Burza gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Burza blocks an elbow strike from Friedmon.

Burza breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Friedmon throws a sloppy head kick and Burza moves out of range easily.
Friedmon wants to clinch up but Burza keeps it at a distance.
Friedmon stuffs the takedown attempt from Burza. Burza gets slowly back to his feet.
Roman Burza is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Friedmon tries to land a leg kick but Burza saw it coming and moves away.

Burza slips under a jab.
Burza lands a nice shot that snaps Friedmon's head back.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Burza.
Friedmon throws a hook but Burza avoids it easily.
Friedmon throws a series of punches but Burza avoids them all with ease.
Friedmon steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Burza. That one must have hurt.
Stanton Friedmon seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Burza closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Burza lands in his opponent's guard.
Friedmon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Burza won't allow Friedmon to sweep him here.

Burza decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Burza lands a nice looking body shot.
Stanton Friedmon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Friedmon wants to clinch.
Burza scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Friedmon looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Friedmon tries to clinch up but Burza circles away and keeps his distance.
Friedmon misses with a jab to the body

and Burza counters with a takedown into side control.

Burza tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Burza has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Friedmon is not content to let Burza control the position.

Burza tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Friedmon is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Friedmon actively working from the bottom here.
Burza works his foot free and advances to mount.
Friedmon working to try and regain half guard.
Roman Burza is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Friedmon tries to hold on but Burza pushes him away.
Burza takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Friedmon is in all sorts of trouble here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Roman Burza showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Burza, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
