2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Michael Schmidt! The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Vladimir Khabensky and Fedor Mirinova.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Schmidt throws a right hand that Kaufmore ducks under and follows up with a left that Kaufmore also avoids with ease. Kaufmore is trying hard to land a takedown here. Schmidt sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Kaufmore fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Schmidt avoids it really well and circles away. Schmidt misses with a jab, cross combination.
Kaufmore avoids a punch combination nicely.
Schmidt rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kaufmore moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Schmidt looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Schmidt throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Schmidt misses with a double jab.
Schmidt fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Schmidt throws a nice looking combination but Kaufmore bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Schmidt scores with a decent looking hook.
It looks like Jeff Kaufmore has been cut. Michael Schmidt is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kaufmore shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Schmidt defends it nicely. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jeff Kaufmore. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kaufmore closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Schmidt did well to prevent Kaufmore getting side control. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Schmidt can do anything to dispel that myth. Kaufmore seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Kaufmore looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Kaufmore looking to control but Schmidt is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kaufmore has control of Schmidt's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Schmidt regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Kaufmore is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Schmidt is surviving well by controlling Kaufmore's body position as best he can. Kaufmore avoids the attempt from Schmidt to control. Schmidt wants to get back to his feet.
Kaufmore looking to ground and pound but Schmidt is blocking nicely. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Schmidt is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Kaufmore really is a fat lump. Schmidt can't escape the position.

Kaufmore working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Kaufmore forces the positional change into back control. Schmidt is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Schmidt is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Kaufmore gets his way!
I really don't envy Schmidt right now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kaufmore patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here? Schmidt tries to break free.
Kaufmore has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Kaufmore is looking for the choke from the back position but Schmidt is controlling his hands well. Schmidt is trying to get back to his feet but Kaufmore has full control of the position and if anything, Schmidt has just worked his way into a worse spot. Kaufmore tries to keep control of the position but Schmidt is staying busy. Kaufmore working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Schmidt is doing well to defend. Kaufmore seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Schmidt is forced to tap and this one is over!
