Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Alex Mason! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
15 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Martin! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martin misses with a double jab.

and Mason counters with a takedown into side control. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Martin tries to buck Mason off but Mason is having none of it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mason controls the position from side control. Mason has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Mason looking to control but instead Martin has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard. Martin is pressing down on Mason's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Mason is standing up over Martin. Martin looks to escape but Mason dives into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Mason stands up and we're back to a striking position. Martin lands a jab to the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. A looping hook to the body misses from Mason. Martin does a little dance to reset his feet. Martin throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Mason changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Martin tries to avoid it but Mason manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Martin to the ground. Martin escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. A looping hook to the body misses from Martin. Mason does a little dance to reset his feet. Mason gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Martin to score an easy takedown into full guard. Martin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Martin trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Martin trying to control but Mason is working from the bottom. Martin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mason swivels though and keeps the full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Martin looking to sit in guard and control but Mason gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Mason controls from within his opponent's guard. Mason stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Martin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Nice sprawl there from Mason as Martin shoots in.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mason avoids the head kick by Martin.
A combination from Martin does no damage. Martin is looking to clinch. Martin tries to bum rush Mason with a series of wild strikes but Mason uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Martin looks to throw the jab but Mason is out of range. Mason closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Mason decides to pull guard. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Mason holds on and takes a little breather. Mason is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Mason has control of Martin's left arm, preventing Martin from doing any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Martin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mason works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Martin trying to control but Mason is working from the bottom. Martin tries to free his leg and advance position but Mason is retaining full guard.
We're going to have a standup here because Alex Mason wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Martin moves in looking to clinch but Mason pushes him off. Martin shoots for a double leg takedown but Mason sprawls well. He's pushed Martin's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Martin misses with a head kick.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Martin displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Mason. Martin tries to clinch up but Mason circles away and keeps his distance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Alex Mason will probably get the nod. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Martin feints and then cracks Mason's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mason down. Mason misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Mason shoots in looking for a takedown. Martin tries to sprawl out of it but Mason keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Martin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Martin misses with a head kick.
Martin gets a takedown into half guard. Mason wants to improve his position but Martin is controlling well.
Martin seems to be working for a kimura but Mason defends the submission attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martin is keen to just control but Mason is a slippery customer. Martin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Martin trying to control the action but Mason is working from the bottom. Mason has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Martin is working away from the top position though. Mason keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Martin tries to improve position but can't. Mason trying to control the position but Martin is working away.

Mason takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Martin scores with the left hand. Mason knows he should have avoided that one. Mason scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Mason looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. This has been an exciting period of action! Mason controlling the position from side mount.

Alex Mason overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. You can see the frustration on Martin's face as Mason controls the position. Martin is looking to regain half guard here but Mason keeps moving and retains side control. Mason trying to control the position but Martin is working away. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Martin is looking for a sweep. Martin is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Martin seems a little lost for a moment, as Mason dominates the positioning. That was a close second round but I would say that Alex Mason will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

That's better than Martin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Mason bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Martin pushes Mason off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Mason takes a kick to the side of the head. Mason tries to close the distance and clinch up but Martin swats him away and circles back towards the center. Mason shoots in for a takedown but Martin shows good takedown defense. Alex Mason is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Martin tries a head kick but it misses.

Possibly, maybe, no Martin has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Martin lands a nice forearm strike. James Martin really dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Mason walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mason is defended easily by Martin. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Martin wants it to stay on the feet. James Martin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.
