PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Vigor Nomo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ridge Odom (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vigor Nomo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ridge Odom!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Odom shoots and misses

and Nomo counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Odom's guard now.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Nomo is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Nomo won't allow Odom to sweep him here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Vigor Nomo.
Nomo shoots in but Odom avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Ridge Odom seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Nomo gets the takedown into side control.
Nomo takes a little break here. Odom wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Odom is looking for a sweep.

Nomo decides to stand up, so the ref orders Odom to his feet.
Odom fails with a takedown attempt.
Nomo shoots in looking for a takedown. Odom tries to sprawl out of it but Nomo keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Odom manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Odom gets caught flat footed, as Nomo shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Odom is working an open guard so Nomo takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Nomo keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Vigor Nomo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ridge Odom.

Nomo changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Odom looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Nomo stands up and beckons Odom to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Nomo is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Odom will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Nomo wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Odom, who protects the arm well.

Odom tries to improve position but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A lull in the action here as Nomo stalls from top position.
Nomo tries to move to mount but Odom blocks the move with his legs.
Odom tries to buck Nomo off but Nomo is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Nomo happy to just control the position for now.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Vigor Nomo.
Odom throws a series of punches but Nomo moves out of range.
Odom shoots for a takedown but Nomo saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Odom looks gassed!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Odom leaves Nomo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Nomo tries to score a power double leg takedown but Odom sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Nomo somewhat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vigor Nomo dominated that round.

Odom tries to clinch but Nomo moves away

and Nomo counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Nomo controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Vigor Nomo.
Odom shoots for a double leg takedown but Nomo sprawls well. He's pushed Odom's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Odom gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Nomo to score an easy takedown into full guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Nomo is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Vigor Nomo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Odom wants to stand up but Nomo is controlling him.

Nomo stands and steps away. Odom gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
No luck for Nomo with that takedown attempt.
Nomo avoids the body shot from Odom.
Odom leaves Nomo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Odom wants to clinch up but Nomo keeps it at a distance.
Odom misses with a takedown

and Nomo counters with a single leg into guard. Odom didn't expect that.
Nomo is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Nomo controls from within his opponent's guard.

Vigor Nomo has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Odom shoots for a double leg takedown but Nomo sprawls well. He's pushed Odom's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Vigor Nomo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ridge Odom.
Odom is breathing heavily.
Nomo fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Nomo shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Odom napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Nomo is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Odom can do to turn this around?
Odom bucks up and tries to throw Nomo off but instead Nomo has got his back!

Nomo biding his time, looking for the opening.
Nomo's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Nomo is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Nomo is working for a kimura but Odom is defending it quite comfortably.
Nomo trying to mount his opponent but Odom defends it.

Nomo controlling the action here.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Vigor Nomo just wasn't active enough.
Odom wants to clinch up but Nomo keeps it at a distance.
Nomo tries to close the distance and clinch but Odom swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nomo throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Nomo tries to clinch but Odom is having none of it.

Odom clinches with his opponent.
Nomo has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Odom is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Odom decides to pull guard.
Nomo engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Odom looking for a sweep. Not yet Odom, not yet.
Nomo controlling from the top position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Nomo seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Odom for as long as he can get away with.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Vigor Nomo.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Nomo.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Odom changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Nomo tries to avoid it but Odom manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Nomo to the ground. Nomo escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Odom gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Nomo breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Odom stuffs the takedown attempt from Nomo. Nomo gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vigor Nomo. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Odom shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Nomo but Nomo pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Vigor Nomo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Odom takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
That kick from Nomo tenderised Odom's leg. Odom is trying to keep his angry face on.
Odom shoots in looking for a takedown. Nomo tries to sprawl out of it but Odom keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Nomo manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Nomo closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Odom's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Vigor Nomo showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Nomo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
