PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brian Conners (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Lewis's choice of entrance music: Shut'Em Down. Brian Conners has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brian Conners!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Lewis!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Conners goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Conners avoids the head kick by Lewis.
Lewis is looking to land body kicks.
Conners shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Lewis tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Lewis throws a right and a left that Conners avoids nicely.
Lewis scores to the head and body with a nice combination!

Conners shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Conners showed some decent athleticism there.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Lewis looks like he's trying to stand up.
Conners looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Conners looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Conners missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Conners looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Lewis with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Conners with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Lewis pushes Conners off and gets back to his feet.
Lewis misses with a head kick.
Conners throws a head kick that misses.
Lewis pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Conners takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Lewis tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Conners closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Lewis quickly recovers to half guard.
Conners slows the pace down in half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Lewis won't allow Conners to pass to mount.
Conners stops Lewis from getting back to his feet.

Conners tries to pass to full mount but Lewis defends it.
Lewis is not content to let Conners control the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Lewis rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Conners moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Lewis with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Lewis throws a sloppy head kick and Conners moves out of range easily.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Conners.

Conners blocks a head kick by Lewis.
Lewis lands a jab to Conners's midsection.

Conners shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Conners showed some decent athleticism there.
Conners tries to pass to full mount but Lewis defends it.
Conners passes the guard and advances to mount!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Conners has control of Lewis's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Lewis regains control of the situation pretty easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Brian Conners will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Lewis misses with a body kick.
Lewis lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Conners circles away quickly and effectively.
Conners tries to clinch but Lewis is having none of it.
Lewis lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

Lewis gets caught napping as Conners dives in and scores a takedown. Lewis manages to retain guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Conners prevents Lewis from getting back to his feet.
Conners works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Conners drops an elbow to the side of Lewis's head.
Conners is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Conners takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Lewis prevents Conners from taking his back.
Lewis is trying to stand.
Lewis is squirming around, avoiding Conners's attempts to control the action.

Conners is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Lewis is surviving well by controlling Conners's body position as best he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lewis's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Conners fails to move to back control.
Lewis is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Conners looking to control and managing it successfully.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Lewis wants to try and get back to his feet.
Conners content just to control the position here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Brian Conners.
Conners closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lewis circles away.
Lewis throws a leg kick but Conners sees it coming and checks it nicely.
No luck for Conners with that takedown attempt.
Lewis misses with a kick to the body.

Lewis slaps away a takedown attempt from Conners, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian Conners. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Conners avoids a punch combination nicely.
Lewis throws a series of punches but Conners moves out of range.
Conners keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Conners looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Lewis throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brian Conners dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Conners tries to clinch up.
Lewis throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Conners showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Lewis.
Conners doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
A combination from Lewis does no damage.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Lewis lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Conners has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Conners and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Lewis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Conners slips a jab and a cross from Lewis.
Lewis throws a head kick but Conners moves out of range.
Lewis misses the shot to the body.
Conners tries for a takedown but Lewis sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Conners moves out of range of the body kick.
Conners fails to land the takedown.
Lewis lands with a thumping leg kick.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Conners.
Conners throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lewis trying to remain calm as Conners controls from the top position.
Mike Lewis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Lewis gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Conners tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Conners lands a nice shot to the head.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Conners wants to control the pace but Lewis is squirming around nicely.

Conners is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Lewis to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Lewis shrugs it off.

Brian Conners showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Conners, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
