PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Will Hurt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hurt kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Slayer - Here Comes The Pain. Will Hurt has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, James Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hurt stuffs the takedown.
Hurt misses with a takedown

and Johnson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Hurt!
Johnson trying to control but Hurt is having none of it.
Hurt is looking to improve his position but Johnson isn't that keen on the idea.
Johnson controlling from the full mount.
Hurt tries to lock up and control but Johnson gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Hurt really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Johnson is standing up, even though he is in mount.
Johnson takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Hurt throws a sloppy head kick

and Johnson counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Johnson.
Johnson trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Hurt manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Johnson manages to get himself to full guard.
Johnson is looking to stand back up but Hurt counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Johnson.
Johnson looks gassed!
Hurt lands a nice forearm strike.
Hurt throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Johnson works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Hurt is keen to just control but Johnson is a slippery customer.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Hurt scores with a couple of nice shots.
Hurt is tying to control. Johnson wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Hurt lands with a punch from half guard.

Hurt looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Hurt wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johnson missing with punches from the bottom.

Hurt is looking for a kimura but Johnson is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hurt to get the leverage.
Hurt seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Johnson does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hurt darts in trying to clinch

and Johnson counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Johnson wants to stand up but Hurt has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Johnson stops Hurt from getting back to his feet.
Still in half guard, Johnson seems content to control.
Johnson trying to mount his opponent but Hurt defends it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hurt has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Johnson is working away from the top position though.
Johnson is trying to control the action in half guard but Hurt is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Johnson is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Hurt has managed to free his arm - good work.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Hurt tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Johnson counters with a three punch combo that has Hurt backing up. Hurt nods at Johnson to acknowledge the strikes.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hurt looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Johnson has managed to clinch.

Johnson ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Johnson no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Johnson dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Johnson scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Johnson tries to advance to mount but Hurt denies him.
Hurt is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Johnson is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Johnson working for a submission but Hurt is keeping him at bay.
Hurt slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Hurt throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Johnson looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Johnson is taking a breather. Hurt says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Johnson is thwarting Hurt's attempts to control the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson working the head and body with strikes.

Johnson is trying for a kimura here. Hurt looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Johnson wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:29 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). James Johnson!
