PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Matt Kay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh William (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Kay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Josh William!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Daniel Franklin and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
William falls off balance throwing a combination
and Kay connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
William moves in looking to clinch but Kay pushes him off.

William has managed to clinch.

William breaks the clinch.

Excellent takedown into side control there by William.
William tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
William really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kay. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kay pushes William away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, William gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Kay manages to work his way to half guard, despite William's best efforts.
William seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
William wants to free his trapped foot but Kay is holding on for dear life with his legs.
William lands strikes from half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kay trying to control here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

William is working for a kimura but Kay is defending it quite comfortably.

Kay is trying to control but can't.
William is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Kay managing to control the position.
William wants to control from the top but Kay keeps moving.
William landing some decent shots from guard.

William drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kay looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kay looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kay!

William is not content to let Kay control the position.
William struggling a bit here.

Kay tries for a kimura but William is defending well.
Kay is looking to take a break and control but William is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Sloppy strikes there by Kay.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kay prevents William from escaping the position.
William is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

William explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
William shoots in but no luck this time.
William dives in and grabs Kay's left leg, looking for a takedown. Kay pushes down on William's head and hops out.
Kay stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Kay wants it to stay on the feet.
Matt Kay has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Josh William.
William looks gassed!
Kay circles away from the clinch attempt.

William tries to keep at a distance but Kay has taken the fight into the clinch.
William has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
William fails to pull guard.

Kay gets control of William's arms and successfully pulls guard. Kay will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

William drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Kay dives on top into guard.
Kay with a flurry of punches that miss.
William keeping moving, preventing Kay from controlling successfully.
Kay stops William from standing up.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kay sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Kay postures up in William's guard and throws a big left but William blocks it.
William tries to land a sweep but no joy.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
William is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kay is controlling him.
Kay is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Josh William will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Kay keeps the fight on the outside.
William fails to land the takedown.
William shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kay but Kay pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Kay leaves William with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Matt Kay has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Josh William.
Kay dives in and grabs William's left leg, looking for a takedown. William pushes down on Kay's head and hops out.
William tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kay swivels and escapes.
Kay shoots in but William avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Kay has closed the distance and engaged William in a clinch.
William wants to get back to striking at distance but Kay won't allow it.
Kay is stalling here.

William is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Kay gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
William is breathing heavily.
Kay works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Kay fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Kay manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as William accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

William stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Kay fails with the takedown.
Kay throws a half hearted mid kick.
Kay throws a body kick that misses.
Kay tries to clinch up.
William closes the distance and clinches up with Kay, looking for a takedown. William pushes Kay against the cage but Kay circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Kay shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has William pinned against the cage. William gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

William doesn't manage to clinch there - Kay circles away.
Kay misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
William fails with an attempt to clinch.
Kay is looking to clinch.
William throws a head kick that misses.
Kay misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kay lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
William throws a series of punches but Kay avoids them all with ease.

William closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Kay quickly recovers to half guard.

William is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

William seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
William thows a huge punch but Kay dodges it nicely.
Kay wants to control but William is keeping busy and won't allow it.

William is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kay defends it well.
Kay is not content to let William control the position.
Kay works his way to full guard. Good work.

William keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Kay's head.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as William accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

William postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Josh William has got the better of the ground game so far.
William stands and throws Kay's legs to the side, diving into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
William cracks Kay with an elbow. That is naaassty.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

William stands up and beckons Kay to his feet.

William gets a takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Josh William showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



William drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kay trying to keep a closed guard but William is proving a slippery customer.
Kay trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
William wants to get up but he can't break Kay's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Kay kicks William off and gets to his feet.
William shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kay pinned against the cage. Kay gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Josh William seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kay is trying hard to land a takedown here. William sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
William tries a head kick but it misses.
Kay shoots in for a double leg but William sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

William misses with a wild combination.

Kay has closed the distance and engaged William in a clinch.
Kay will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning William up against the cage.
William is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Kay is defending well.

William pulls guard.

William has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kay can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Kay is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Kay decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on William, up you get!

Kay fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matt Kay. That's going to take a lot out of him.
William shoots in but Kay avoids the takedown attempt easily.
A punch combination from Kay misses.
William shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kay tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but William swivels and escapes.
Kay fails with a takedown attempt.
Kay slaps away a takedown attempt from William, before circling back to the center of the mat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

William shoots for a takedown but Kay saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Kay fails in his attempt to clinch.
William blocks a head kick by Kay.

William shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
William passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Kay!
William throws some wild stikes that Kay manages to avoid easily.
Kay tries to hold on but William pushes him away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kay is in all sorts of trouble here.
William lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Kay is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
William trying to control but he's not successful this time.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

BOOM! William connects with a massive shot to the dome!
William trying to control but Kay is having none of it.
Josh William is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

William stands up from mount. Strange move.
Matt Kay has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
William tries to clinch up.

And that's the end of the fight!
Josh William comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got William winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
