Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Fabio Gomes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Richard Skinner! The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Dillan Fox and Alec Ball.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice uppercut lands for Skinner. That snapped Gomes's head back.
Gomes rushes Skinner and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Skinner is trying to stall.
Skinner is trying to push Gomes away but Gomes has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Skinner swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Skinner tries to break the clinch but Gomes is controlling the position. Skinner is trying to break the clinch but Gomes has him pressed against the cage. Skinner tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Gomes's elbow. A battle for position here, against the cage. Skinner tries to break the clinch but Gomes is controlling the position. Gomes is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Skinner pulls him back up using the underhooks. Gomes is looking for a takedown. Skinner wants to get back to striking at distance but Gomes won't allow it.
Skinner wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gomes has him pressed against the cage. Gomes is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Skinner gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fabio Gomes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Skinner tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Skinner tries to break free but Gomes pushes him back against the cage. Skinner trying to control the position but instead, Gomes has worked for underhooks and has pushed Skinner into the cage. Gomes manages to pull guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Skinner trying to control but Gomes is working from the bottom. Skinner must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Skinner throws a big elbow that misses. Skinner throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Gomes works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Gomes has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Skinner off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. Gomes is breathing heavily. Skinner connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Gomes's hands. Skinner lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Skinner lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. This has been an exciting period of action! Good shot there by Skinner. Gomes takes one to the chin there. Skinner swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gomes closes this distance looking for a takedown but Skinner circles away. A left lands for Skinner.
Gomes is rocked! Gomes takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Gomes dodges the punch combination from Skinner.
Richard Skinner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Skinner throws a right and a left that both miss. Skinner misses with a double jab.
Skinner connects with a jab. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Skinner lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. A punch combination from Skinner misses. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Richard Skinner dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Skinner dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Skinner connects with a body shot. Skinner drops Gomes with a beautiful combination! Gomes stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Skinner is looking for the KO! Oh Gomes is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Skinner lands a brutal uppercut that launches Gomes off his feet! Gomes tumbles to the floor, barely conscious - the referee jumps in to save him from a beating! Wow, what an ending!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:23 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Richard Skinner!
