PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Payne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lewis comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Numb by Linkin Park kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Payne!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Lewis!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Payne rushes Lewis and presses him up against the cage.
Payne tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Payne wants a takedown.
Lewis is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Lewis breaks from the clinch.
Payne tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Lewis swivels and escapes.
Payne tries for a takedown but Lewis circles away easily

and Lewis counters by clinching up.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Payne. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Payne has Lewis pressed against the cage, preventing Lewis from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Payne is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Lewis gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Payne tries to pull guard but Lewis holds him up against the cage and eventually Payne drops back down to his feet.

Payne shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lewis as he avoids it easily.
Payne tries to clinch up but Lewis circles away and keeps his distance.

Payne wants a takedown.
Lewis is trying to pull guard but Payne turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Lewis is trying to push Payne away but Payne has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Lewis has had enough of the clinch but Payne keeps him there for the moment.
Lewis is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Payne pulls guard effortlessly.
Payne pulls Lewis in close to prevent any damage.
Payne trying to keep a closed guard but Lewis is proving a slippery customer.
Payne could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Lewis with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Payne wants to get back to his feet but Lewis is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Lewis stays in close to Payne's body and controls the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Anthony Payne wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Payne shoots for a takedown but Lewis saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Lewis looks to land a combination but Payne avoids it well.
Payne shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Lewis wants to clinch up but Payne keeps it at a distance.
Lewis throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Payne's waist but Payne gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lewis off to one side.
Payne throws a series of punches but Lewis moves out of range.

Lewis's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Payne comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Lewis drives through and clinches with Payne against the cage.
Payne is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Lewis pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Lewis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Payne fails with a takedown attempt.

Lewis has closed the distance and engaged Payne in a clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Lewis jumps into guard, dragging Payne to the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anthony Payne dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Payne shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Lewis counters by clinching up.
Payne looking to slow down the pace here.
Payne jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Lewis walks away with a smile on his face. Payne gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Payne tries to close the distance and clinch but Lewis swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A solid leg kick lands there for Payne.
Nice sprawl there from Lewis as Payne shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Payne. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Lewis stuffs the takedown.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Nice takedown defense from Lewis. No joy for Payne on that attempt.

Lewis drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Payne is trying to buck Lewis off.

Lewis decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Lewis rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Payne moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Payne tries for a takedown but Lewis sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Payne misses with a low kick.

Payne gets tackled into the cage by Lewis. Lewis maintains the clinch.

Payne has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lewis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Payne tries to pull guard but Lewis won't allow it.

Lewis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Payne gets caught flat footed, as Lewis shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Lewis is fighting to break Payne's control of his arms but Payne is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Lewis stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Payne tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Lewis counters with a left to the body.
Lewis stuffs the takedown attempt from Payne. Payne gets slowly back to his feet.

Lewis closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Payne did well to prevent Lewis getting side control.

Payne wants to get back to full guard but Lewis has passed into side control.
Payne gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Payne wants to get back to full guard.

Lewis decides to return to a standing position.
Payne tries to clinch but Lewis moves away

and Lewis counters with a takedown into side control.
Payne tries to improve position but can't.

Lewis has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
No luck for Payne with that takedown attempt.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

John Lewis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Lewis is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Payne's half guard.
Payne is looking to control Lewis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Payne avoid being mounted?
Payne works his way to full guard. Good work.

Payne looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Lewis wants to stand and escape but instead Payne has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Lewis is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Payne stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lewis swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Payne slips nicely into half guard.
Payne uses his free foot to push down on Lewis's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Lewis.
Lewis is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Payne tries to control but Lewis wriggling away.
Payne is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Lewis is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Payne looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Payne thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lewis tries to control Payne's body but Payne pushes him off. Lewis squirms to his side and now Payne has his back!

Payne is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Payne's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

Payne biding his time, looking for the opening.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Payne missing with punches from the back.
Lewis controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Anthony Payne showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Payne has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
