Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Valor! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Valodia Smirnov! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Alyssa Summers and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Valor closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Smirnov quickly recovers to half guard. Valor is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Smirnov tries to roll over but Valor keeps him under control. Valor is looking to stall here but Smirnov recovers full guard. Valor has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Valor looking to pass the guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Valor wanted to stand there but Smirnov had control of the position. Smirnov is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Valor stopping the sweep attempt from Smirnov. Valor throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smirnov seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The ref stands the fighters back up. John Valor wasn't doing enough on the ground. Valor shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Valor seems to be looking for submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smirnov is staying active underneath Valor, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smirnov moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Smirnov wants to sweep here but Valor controlling him for the moment. Valor postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smirnov is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Valor, into his guard. Valor is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Smirnov trying to control but Valor is working from the bottom. Smirnov throws an elbow that misses. Valor uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Smirnov's guard. Nice move by Valor! Valor wants to control from the top but Smirnov keeps moving. Smirnov is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Smirnov is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
John Valor dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Smirnov swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
John Valor seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Valor gets a takedown into half guard. Valor trying to pass the guard but Smirnov defending well. Valor really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Valor trying to control the action but Smirnov is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smirnov is concentrating on defense, preventing Valor from advancing position. Valor stalling.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of John Valor. Valor shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Smirnov is trying to defend but Valor finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Smirnov wants to control but Valor is keeping busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Valor throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Smirnov tries to roll over but Valor keeps him under control. Valor is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Valor here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man. Smirnov is looking to improve his position.
Valor misses with a head shot. Smirnov uses the momentum to regain guard. John Valor overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Smirnov trying to control the position here. Let's hope that Smirnov has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Valor in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Valor. Smirnov is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Smirnov is looking to improve his position.
Smirnov works his way to full guard. Good work. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smirnov can do anything to dispel that myth. Smirnov keeping moving, preventing Valor from controlling successfully. Smirnov looking to hit a scissor sweep but Valor is one step ahead there.

The ref stands the fighters back up because John Valor just wasn't active enough. Smirnov blocks a head kick by Valor.
Smirnov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smirnov lands in his opponent's guard. Smirnov slips nicely into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smirnov takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Smirnov lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Smirnov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Smirnov is trying to control the action in half guard but Valor is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Smirnov is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Valor still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Valor has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work! Valor trying to control the action but Smirnov is working from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smirnov parries the strikes from Valor easily there. Valor is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Smirnov to escape.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Valor wants to control but Smirnov is keeping him busy. Smirnov regains full guard. Nicely done. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Valor accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Valor trying to control the position from guard on top but Smirnov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Valodia Smirnov. Well Valor has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
