Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Medrado! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jon Jones! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Edson Gomes and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Medrado shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Medrado looking to pass the guard. Jones kicks Medrado off and gets to his feet. Jones shoots in but Medrado avoids the takedown attempt easily. Medrado tries to clinch up and Jones counters with a nice double leg into guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Medrado throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Medrado escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jones gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Jones trying to control but Medrado is working from the bottom. Jones should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Medrado managing to control the position. Medrado looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones throwing strikes from guard but Medrado blocks nicely. Medrado is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Medrado has his foot on Jones's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jones works his way back into a safe position though. Jones wants to control from the top but Medrado keeps moving. Jones wants to get up but he can't break Medrado's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Medrado manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Jones has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Medrado not allowing Jones to control his hands. Jones tries to escape but Medrado has the hooks in and won't let him break free. Jones just trying to survive but Medrado is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Medrado is working for the choke. It looks like he might have got it... has he...? Yes! Jones is tapping out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jose Medrado! During a confident post fight interview, Jose Medrado thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
