Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ron Aldo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Lyoto Machida! The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Shirou Masuda and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Aldo misses with a looping right. Machida uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Aldo.
Machida looking to score a takedown here. Aldo is defending well but Machida drives through and ends up in Aldo's guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Machida stands up from Aldo's guard - Machida perhaps looking for a knockout. Machida closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Machida lands in his opponent's guard. Aldo has a closed guard, preventing Machida from standing up. Aldo not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Aldo wants to sweep but no luck. Aldo is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Machida wants to stand but Aldo is controlling his posture from full guard. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Aldo trying to keep a closed guard but Machida is proving a slippery customer.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Ron Aldo just wasn't active enough. Machida uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Aldo.
That's one minute gone in the round. Aldo shoots in looking for a takedown but Machida manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Aldo's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Machida looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Machida looks winded! Aldo trying to control from the bottom.
Aldo is looking to improve his position.
Aldo wants to control but Machida is keeping busy and won't allow it. Machida gets to his feet - back to striking we go! Aldo throws a jab but it's blocked by Machida. Machida avoids a punch combination nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Machida shoots in and bounces Aldo off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Aldo looking to control.
Aldo is really struggling to control Machida but he's trying to hold on to the position. Machida wanted to stand there but Aldo had control of the position. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Machida is sitting in close to Aldo's body. Aldo has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Machida is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Machida is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Aldo.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Ron Aldo! After winning the bout, Ron Aldo thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
