Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 27 - 19 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Bruens!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Charles wants to clinch
and Bruens counters with a leg kick.
Charles leaves Bruens with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Bruens ducks under a wild hook from Charles.
Charles is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Bruens misses with a two punch combination.
Charles tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Bruens counters with a nice body shot.
Bruens ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Charles moves away.

Charles gets caught flat footed, as Bruens shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Charles has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Bruens has passed into side control.

Charles tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Charles is working hard here to advance position.
Bruens staying calm.
Bruens with the ground and pound but Charles regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Bruens not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Charles avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Bruens.
Bruens has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Charles wants to control but Bruens is keeping busy.
Bruens with the ground and pound but Charles uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Bruens is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Let's hope that Bruens has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Paul Bruens hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Charles tries to clinch up.
Bruens throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Bruens throws a leg kick but Charles sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Charles scores with a one two! Bruens had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Charles fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Bruens takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Jean Charles seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jab, jab by Charles - just one landing.

Bruens tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Charles swivels and escapes.
Charles connects with an inside leg kick.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Charles scores with a spinning back kick!
Bruens lands a body shot.
Bruens fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Charles looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Bruens can't break the clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Charles scores with a shoulder strike.
Charles misses with a punch on the inside.
Charles misses with a knee to the head.
Charles lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jean Charles will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Ouch! a nice leg kick from Bruens, right into the meat.
Charles is looking to clinch but Bruens is avoiding it.
Charles lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.

Bruens decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Bruens prevents Charles from standing back up.
Bruens keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Bruens not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Bruens is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Charles is not content to let Bruens control the position.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Bruens throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Bruens is looking to take a break and control but Charles is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Paul Bruens hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Bruens shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Charles as he avoids it easily.
Charles throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
A looping hook to the body misses from Bruens. Charles does a little dance to reset his feet.
Bruens avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Charles throws a wild body kick that Bruens sees coming a mile off.

Bruens walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

and Charles cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

and Bruens connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Bruens checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Charles is looking to clinch but Bruens is avoiding it.

and Charles counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Jean Charles has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Bruens.

Charles has closed the distance and engaged Bruens in a clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Charles goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Charles throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Bruens blocks it with crossed arms.

Charles doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Bruens tries to circle away but Charles has him pinned against the cage.
Bruens wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Bruens blocks a body shot from Charles.

Bruens breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A cross from Charles lands.
Bruens swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Bruens shoots in for a takedown but Charles shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Charles on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Charles lands a head kick. Bruens smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Charles throws a body punch but Bruens moves out of range.
Bruens punishes Charles's body with a nice straight punch.
Charles moves out of range as Bruens strikes.

Bruens uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Charles.
Charles scores with a head kick. Bruens tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Charles tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bruens swats him away and circles back towards the center.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Charles tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Bruens paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Charles thuds his right hand into Bruens's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jean Charles will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Still in the clinch, Charles scores with a nice short uppercut.

Bruens has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Charles tries to work over Bruens's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Charles blocks a punch to the side of the head.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Bruens shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Bruens on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Bruens fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Charles manages to avoid it.
Charles lands a nice hook to Bruens's body. Bruens takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Bruens throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Charles stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Charles tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Bruens manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Charles scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Bruens missing with a left hand there. Charles was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Charles fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Bruens manages to avoid it.
Charles throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Charles buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Paul Bruens has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Bruens throws a hook but Charles avoids it easily.
Charles cracks Bruens with a right hand to the side of the head.
Bruens takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Bruens.
Jean Charles has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Bruens.

Jean Charles showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Charles, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
