Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Nikola Filip! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Maksim Smirnov! The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Tarja Halkonen and Matti Vanhoillinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Filip takes the fight into the clinch. Filip wants to break free but Smirnov has control.
Smirnov wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Filip has him pressed against the cage. Filip tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Smirnov smiles and moves away.
Filip shoots in for a double leg but Smirnov sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Filip looks for a takedown but Smirnov sprawls well. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nikola Filip. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smirnov tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. A solid body kick from Smirnov. That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Filip crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Smirnov - the referee stops the clock and Filip gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Smirnov. Filip manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes. Smirnov tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Filip fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Smirnov throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Filip looks for a takedown but Smirnov sprawls well. Filip fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Nikola Filip seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Filip will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. A big right from Smirnov misses. Filip feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Filip trying to control but Smirnov is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Filip tries to free his leg and advance position but Smirnov is retaining full guard.

Smirnov is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Smirnov has escaped and now he's on top! Filip doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Smirnov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Filip. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Filip throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Filip had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Smirnov is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Filip Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Smirnov's back instead.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Filip looking for the choke but no joy. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Filip patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here? And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Maksim Smirnov dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Filip shoots in and drives through. Smirnov sprawls well. Filip shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smirnov but Smirnov pushes him off and we're back to square one. Smirnov throws out a loose jab but Filip uses good head movement to avoid it. Nikola Filip is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Nice takedown defense from Smirnov. No joy for Filip on that attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nikola Filip. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smirnov tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Smirnov lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. Filip shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Filip showed some decent athleticism there. Filip uses his free foot to push down on Smirnov's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Smirnov. Smirnov holds on for dear life. Filip throwing strikes here but Smirnov is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Filip throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smirnov's waist but Smirnov gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Filip off to one side. Horrible takedown by Filip or perhaps it was just good defense by Smirnov which made him look bad. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Filip clinches. Filip drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Filip jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Smirnov manages to avoid the submission attempt. Filip trying to control the position but Smirnov is working away. Filip looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Smirnov won't allow Filip to pass to mount. Filip wants to take a breather but Smirnov is having none of it. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Filip wants to work for an arm triangle but Smirnov is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
